The Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech have received verbal commitments from Brad Oberg of Spartanburg, SC and MaryKathryn Terry of Atlanta, GA.
Brad Oberg was recently crowned South Carolina state champion in the 100 fly and 100 back, as well as in the 200 medley relay along with his teammates at Spartanburg High School. The Vikings were runners up at the Class AAAA state meet held at University of South Carolina Natatorium on October 5, 2013. (See our coverage here.)
With the Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club, Oberg specializes in the 100/200 back, and 100/200 fly. His best short course times are 50.11/1:57.99 in the back and 50.11/1:50.55 in the fly. He finished top-8 at the YMCA National Short Course Championship in the 100 back and top-16 in the 100 and 200 fly.
Oberg had a strong long course season, too, culminating in third-place finishes in the 100 back (57.91) and 200 back (2:08.12, which was more than 11 seconds faster than his seed time), a fifth in the 200 fly (2:08.00) and a seventh in the 100 fly (56.82) at the YMCA National Long Course Championship in August. He was also a member of the winning 800 free relay team.
Oberg is a two-time member of USA Swimming’s Scholastic All-America Team.
MaryKathryn Terry, a sprinter from Atlanta, GA, has verbally agreed to become a Yellow Jacket starting in 2013-14 season.
Terry is no stranger to the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. It was there she scored two fifth-place finishes –in the 50 and 100 free– at the 2013 GHSA 1-5A State Swimming & Diving Meet. She went 24.19 in the 50 and 52.00 in the 100 in that pool, both record-breaking performances for The Paideia School in Atlanta. In addition, Terry claims school records in the 200 and 500 free events and the 100 fly.
Terry is a member of Dynamo Swim Club in Atlanta. Her best short course times are 24.19/51.9/1:52.5 in the 50/100/200 free and 58.4 in the 100 fly. Long course she’s been 27.78/1:00/2:09 and 1:06.5 in those same events. Terry’s 50 and 100 times are very close to making Georgia Tech’s top-ten list. She should be a welcome addition to the Yellow Jackets.
