FINAL TEAM SCORES:

After falling to Notre Dame on Friday, the Georgia Tech men and women bounced back with a pair of wins against Northwestern on Saturday. The women’s team came down to the final race, with the Yellow Jackets winning the 400 free relay to seal the deal.

Iris Wang contributed a pair of individual wins in the women’s close victory. She was the only swimmer to break 1:50 in the 200 free, leading from start to finish in 1:49.54. She battled with teammate Kaitlin Kitchens in the 100 free. They flipped just over a tenth apart at the halfway point, but Wang pulled ahead on the back half to win in 50.42 to Kitchens’ 51.04. Wang also finished a close 2nd in the 50 free (23.40). Northwestern’s Mary Warren won it in 23.19.

GT freshman Caio Pumputis was the only man to record a triple as he helped the Yellow Jacket men to victory. He and teammate Moises Loschi were neck-and-neck through the front half of the 100 breast, but Pumputis broke away down the stretch to win it 54.45 to 55.17. He returned from the 100 free, coming from slightly behind to beat fellow freshman Albert Zhi (46.05) with his 45.32. Pumputis closed the session with one more win in the 200 IM (1:52.34).

Freshman teammate Franco Reyes pulled off a double for the Yellow Jackets. He got the ball rolling in the 50 free, putting up a 20.66 to out-swim sophomore teammate Aidan Pastel (20.97). In the 100 fly, Reyes and Northwestern’s Ryan Tate (49.57) were tied in 23.13 at the 50, but Reyes had the better back half to win it in 48.95 while Tate faded to 3rd.

Northwestern also showed of their freshman talent with a pair of individual wins from Calypso Sheridan on the women’s side. In the 100 back, she trailed GT freshman Allie Paschal (55.69), 26.85 to 27.14, at the 50, but blazed home to out-touch Paschal in 55.52. Sheridan then completed her sweep of the backstrokes with a 1:59.49 in the 200 back.

EVANSTON, Illinois — The Yellow Jackets bounced back from losses to the nationally ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday, to sweep the Northwestern University Wildcats in dual meet action on Saturday in Evanston, Illinois. The women’s team edged Northwestern 153-147 with the outcome coming down to the very last race of the meet, while the men’s team ran away with a 209-85 road win.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next week, Saturday, Oct. 28, as Tech will host Delta State University at 11 a.m. ET at the McAuley Aquatic Center. The event will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, as well as Family Weekend.

Women’s Highlights

The women’s team (2-1) was able to get a big win in the very last race of the day, the 400 free relay event, to edge the Wildcats (0-2) for the 153-147 road win.

The biggest win of the day came in the women’s 400 free relay, as the Jackets entered the last race of the meet down by three points. However, the team of Iris WangChloe MillerSara Gilbert and Kaitlin Kitchens picked up a first-place finish by nearly four seconds with a time of 3:24.95 to give the Yellow Jackets the dual meet win.

Individually, the Yellow Jackets scored five wins overall for the meet by way of Camryn Hidalgo, Wang, Julia Shuford and Laura Branton, highlighted by Hidalgo’s win in the 1-meter dive where the freshman scored a 301.65 to defeat 2017 NCAA diving champion and all-American Olivia Rosendahl.

Wang touched the wall in first-place overall in the women’s 200 free with her time of 1:49.54 and picked up the victory in the women’s 100 free with a time of 50.42.

Shuford recorded her win in the women’s 200 breast with a time of 2:19.50, while Branton’s victory came in the women’s 100 fly with her time of 55.79.

Tech also got points on the diving boards from Hidalgo (294.68), Carly Doi (255.68) and Paige Gohr (219.68) who finished 2-3-4 in the women’s 3-meter dive and Doi (217.58) in the 1-meter dive with her fifth-place finish.

Freshman Camille Long (10:25.61) and sophomore Sara al Khatib (10:32.53) scored pints for the Jackets in the women’s 1000 free placing second and fourth, respectively, while in the women’s 200 free fellow freshman Celine Nugent (1:53.03) took third overall, two spots in front of fellow Jacket Lindsay Wallace (1:55.30) and her fifth-place finish.

Allie Paschal (55.69), Megan Young (57.19) and Gilbert (57.42) finished second, third and fourth overall in the women’s 100 back event, while Florina Ilie (1:03.98) and Kristen Hepler (1:06.62) scored for the Jackets in the women’s 100 breast race with a second and fourth-place finish, respectively.

Tech went third, fourth and fifth in the women’s 200 fly by way of Tamir Gonen (2:0.78), Branton (2:06.50) and Miller (2:07.56), while Wang (23.40), Kitchens (23.41), Catriona MacGregor (24.39) and Morgan Lyons (24.44) placed second, third, fourth and fifth overall in the women’s 50 free.

Kitchens also posted a runner-up finish in the women’s 100 free with her time of 51.04, placing three spots ahead of fellow upperclassman Megan Hansen and her fifth-place time of 52.95.

The Yellow Jackets also got points from both Paschal (2:03.20) and Caroline Lee (2:04.28) with their third and fourth place finishes in the women’s 200 back, while Ilie (2:19.66) and Hepler (2:20.97) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the women’s 200 breast.

Both Nugent (5:04.50) and Wallace (5:08.23) finished in the top-five in the women’s 500 free, as Miller (56.96) and Lyons (57.59) finished third and fourth overall in the women’s 100 fly.

The Jackets also took second (1:43.76) and third (1:47.11) overall in the women’s 200 medley relay and third (3:31.81) in the 400 free relay on the afternoon.

Men’s Highlights

The men’s team (2-1) recorded 13 wins over the 16 events to run away with a decisive 209-85 win over the Wildcats (0-3).

Tech’s wins in the pool on Saturday came by way of Rodrigo CorreiaCaio PumputisChristian FerraroFranco ReyesColt Williamson and Moises Loschi, while Matt Casillas swept the diving events.

Pumputis posted three wins on the day in the 100 breast (54.45), the 100 free (45.32) and in the 200 IM (1:52.34), while freshman Reyes registered two wins for the Yellow Jackets in the men’s 50 free (20.66) and the men’s 100 fly (48.95).

Correia posted a first-place finish in the men’s 200 free with a time of 1:38.30, while

Williamson touched the wall first overall in the men’s 200 back with his time of 1:49.82.

Ferraro recorded the win in the men’s 200 fly event with a time of 1:49.74, while Loschi turned in a win for the Jackets in the men’s 200 breast with a time of 2:00.84.

The Jackets swept the diving events, as Casillas took home first-place honors in both the 1-meter dive (329.03) and the 3-meter dive (329.03). Freshman Henry Carmanplaced second in the 3-meter (291.30) and third in the 1-meter (266.33), while fellow first-year Jacket Jacob Kreider did the exact opposite, finishing second in the 1-meter (276.08) and third in the 3-meter (279.98) events.

In the relay events, the unit of Correia, Loschi, Reyes and Corben Miles posted a win with a time of 1:30.13 in the men’s 200 medley relay, while the squad of Correia, Albert Zhi, Ferraro and Pumputis took home the victory in the men’s 400 free relay with their time of 3:02.20.

Also scoring for the Jackets on Saturday, was both Ferraro (1:40.58) with a runner-up finish and Jeffrey Murray (1:42.83) with a fourth-place finish in the men’s 200 free. Sophomore Brennan Day (9:34.70), sophomore Joonas Koski (9:35.34) and Williamson (9:47.63) finished second, third and fourth in the men’s 1000 free, while Brad Obergtouched the wall in third-place overall with a time of 50.86 in the men’s 100 back.

Loschi placed second in the men’s 100 breast with a time of 55.17, while Zhi touched the wall in fourth overall in the event with his time of 58.06. Sophomore Clay Heringadded another runner-up finish for the Jackets in the men’s 200 fly with a time of 1:49.76, while fellow sophomore Tim Slanschek touched the wall in fourth overall with a time of 1:52.65 in the fly event.

In the 50 free, Aidan Pastel (20.97) and Miles (21.19) placed second and third behind Reyes, respectively, to score points for the Jackets, while Zhi (46.05) and Pastel (46.46) touched the wall in second and fourth overall in the men’s 100 free event.

Freshman Leon Warnakulasuriya finished fourth overall in the men’s 200 back with a time of 1:53.08, while the Jackets swept the top-four positions in the men’s 200 breast as Joseph Portillo (2:05.81), Alex Kimpel (2:06.18) and Jonathan Yang (2:06.87) finished second, third and fourth overall behind Loschi.

Koski took second-place overall in the men’s 500 free with his time of 4:35.79, while Ferraro (4:37.01) and Day (4:41.04) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the distance free event.

Correia posted a runner-up finish in the 100 fly with a time of 49.19 to score for Tech, while fellow upperclassmen Kimpel (1:55.27) and Loschi (1:55.34) also scored with third and fourth-place showings in the men’s 200 IM.

PRESS RELEASE – NORTHWESTERN MEN:

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men’s swimming set seven additional season-high times against Georgia Tech, but Georgia Tech came away with a 209-85 victory Saturday afternoon. e

To start off the meet, Northwestern’s relay teams finished second and third in the 200 medley relay. The team of Alex SnarskiWill HofstadterRyan Tate and Almog Oshtein tallied a season-best time of 1:31.84 to take second, while the quartet of Jack ThorneThanas Kountroubis, Arjun Sharm and Keegan Bundy placed third in 1:33.24.

First year DJ Hwang continued to impress. He won the 1000 free with a time of 9:28.47. He then improved on his season-best time in the 500 free by swimming the event in 4:37.17.

Junior Jack Thorne won the 100 back with a time of 50.47, and senior Alex Snarski finished second with a time of 50.78.

First year Liam Gately won the 500 free and tallied a season-high time of 4:35.48. Fellow first year Lyon Zhang improved his season-best time in the 100 breast by finishing in 58.74.

Junior Tyler Lis notched two second-place finishes in the 200 back and 200 IM. Lis swam his fastest 200 IM of the season, coming in at 1:54.85.

In the 100 free, senior Alex Snarski set a personal-best time of 46.44. Junior Ryan Tateimproved his season-high in the event to 46.07.

Northwestern returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 28, when the Wildcats take on UIC and the University of Chicago at 10 a.m. CT at Norris Aquatics Center.

PRESS RELEASE – NORTHWESTERN WOMEN:

EVANSTON, Ill. — In a tightly contested meet Saturday morning at the Norris Aquatics Center, Northwestern women’s swimming and diving team grabbed nine individual wins, and placed in the top two in all but two events against Georgia Tech.

While the Wildcats held the lead until the final event, the Yellow Jackets pulled ahead for a 153-147 victory to end the meet.

The ‘Cats came out strong from the beginning, starting the meet off with a win by the 200 medley relay team of first years Calypso SheridanSophie AngusIlektra Lebl and senior Mary Warren. They took the top spot with a time of 1:43.40.

Following the relay win, senior Sydney Modeas posted 10:23.20 to win the 1,000 free. Sophomore Irune Andres, who had set a new personal best time in the 1,000 free just the day before, created a new career record with a time of 10:26.01.

Northwestern continued to put up top numbers, with a second place finish in the next event by senior Anna Keane, who touched the wall in 1:51.29.

The ‘Cats took the next four races by storm, putting a tally in the win column for each event. Sheridan won the 100 back in 55.52, followed by Angus taking the 100 breast for the second meet in a row with a time of 1:03.96. Northwestern went 1-2 in the 200 fly with junior Alex Grimes in first, followed by Lebl just .05 seconds after. To grab the fourth win, Warren set a new season-best in the 50 free, winning in 23.19.

The team took the top two spots again in the 200 back, this time with a win from Sheridan in 1:59.49, and second place finish by sophomore Nicole Aarts with a time of 2:02.97.

For the final win of the day, sophomore Krystal Lara beat out her competition with a time of 5:02.86 in the 500 free.

To close out the meet, the Wildcats put up three more second-place finishes. Grimes took second in in the 100 fly in 56.09, and Sheridan finished the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.10. Northwestern’s 400 free relay team, consisting of Lara, Warren, Keane, and sophomore Malorie Han ended the day with a time of 3:28.72.

Junior Olivia Rosendahl, reigning platform national champion, continued to dominate the diving boards with a commanding 318.68 points to win the 3-meter event, and a score of 290.93 for a second-place finish in the 1-meter event. Junior diver Eryn Scannell followed close behind, taking third in the 1-meter with 276.75 points.

The ‘Cats return to the pool next Friday in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, for a 3 p.m. meet against the host Fighting Illini and Rutgers.
