Germantown Academy boys and girls win Inter-Ac titles and finish the dual meet season undefeated.

On Tuesday, The Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, PA) boys swim team won the Inter-Ac league title fafter finishing the dual meet season undefeated (6-0). The Patriots defeated the Haverford School on Tuesday 98-74.
The girls team also won the Inter-Ac league title for the first time since 2015 after defeating Agnes Irwin School (138-46) that same night. The girls also finish the season undefeated.
“To win a league championship is not easy. There’s a lot of parity, the competition is incredible. What these boys and girls accomplished, I can’t say enough about them,” said Head Coach Jeff Thompson in a press release.
En-route to securing both league titles, Germantown Academy won all 24 events of the night. The night started with the Germantown Academy girls 200 medley relay going 1-2. The A team featured Nicole Ramile, Lilly Acker, Charlotte Harobin, and Lucy Harobin (1:53.49). The B team finished at 1:57.81 with a lineup of Sarah Freeman, Eliza Meth, Arina Vorobyeva, and Lana Karpf. The Agnes Irwin School’s A relay touched at 2:03.05.
The Germantown Academy Boys also won the 200 medley relay (1:36.91) with Jack Maketa, Landon D’Ariano, Andy Zhao, and Henry Morrissey. The team finished almost four-seconds ahead of the Haverford School relay (1:40.72)
In 10 races, the Patriots took the top two spots. In three events, Germantown Academy swept all three spots, which were all on the girls’ side of the meet.
The first time a 1-2-3 sweep happened was in the girls 200 freestyle. Ramile (1:58.37), Isa Lieu (2:02.00), and CC Leoni (2:04.48) finished twelve-seconds ahead of the 4th place finisher from Agnes Irwin. In the girls 100 freestyle, Karly Boles (53.89) led Vorobyeva (54.33), and Karpf (58.63) to another sweep. This happened one last time in the girls 100 backstroke with Vorobyeva (59.74), Sarah Freeman (1:02.40), and Meth (1:04.62).
Maketa, who will swim for Yale in the fall, won two individual events and was part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. He won the 50 freestyle (21.29) ahead of teammate Brandon Fleck (22.10). He also won the 100 backstroke (51.93), which is just off his lifetime best (51.46) from last year’s Inter-Ac Championship meet.
Morrissey, a Stanford commit, won the 500 freestyle (4:31.62) by 23 seconds. He was also part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. In the 200 freestyle, Germantown’s Jay Freeman (1:40.24) and Morrissey (1:43.64) finished first and second, respectively.
The meet concluded with Germantown victories in the 400 freestyle relay. The Girls’ A team consisted of Boles, Freeman, Emily Hamill, and Vorobyeva (3:37.19). The Patriots’ B team finished 2nd (4:08.79) with Katie Martin, Leoni, Rachel Khavinson, and Maggie Morrissey.
The Germantown A relay of Fleck, Freeman, Maketa, and Morrissey touched 1st (3:20.00), just one-second ahead of the Haverford School’s A relay.
“The main thing has always been the main thing and that’s Easterns,” Coach Thompson said in the press release. “We circled that date on the calendar in March of 2020. I have no doubt that this group of young people will stay focused. Tonight was never a goal, tonight was a byproduct of the end goal. We’ll be excited for the Inter-Ac Invitational, but we’re going to be ready when we get to Lancaster.”
The Patriots’ next competition will be the Inter-Ac Invitational on February 12. After that Germantown Academy will swim at the Eastern Swimming Championship from February 24 to February 26.
One year later…boys and girls both repeat as Inter-Ac champs. This Jeff Thompson has been cooking something special for the past 8 years, from the ground up. Through all the turmoil he completely reshaped the culture of this swim team and has definitely turned it around for the best. Even though he wasn’t around for the 2012 peanut incident, he has arguably been making more noise with this team since that happened. Word is that Arthur Frayler’s elephant actually fled to PWAC along with the Shoulberg cult.
Rumor has it that Texas commit Landon D’Ariano’s underwaters are freakier than Carl Dowzicky’s.

Congrats to GA. Back in the day (before Indiana on the scene), this happened almost every year without fanfare. I think the GA girls won the inter-ac 29 straight times through 2013. The boys won something like 42 of 45 inter-ac titles.
So 1 inter-ac win in 9 years is a good start for the new coaches.

Just couldn’t resist…backhanded compliment. One would think as a swimmer you would understand the work and sacrifice (in the middle of a pandemic) along with the hard academics. Always gotta remind…hope someone steals your (and your childrens) thunder (by living in the past) every time you have a big win (first for these kids).

From a former inter-ac swimmer, I can confirm GA’s dominance back in the day. I remember racing the boys team for their 41st title, what phenomenal coaching.
When the meet ended in a tie for points, the inter-ac came down to a 1v1 basketball match between our coach and ours. When GA’s coach landed the meet (and league) winning three, everyone in the building knew how special it was. I can still see the legend Carl Dowzicky planting forehead kisses on all his teammates in celebration. Truly a tender moment.
Great job Team. I heard that you had a 90 minute morning practice and 120 afternoon practice before the meet. Again, great job and keep working for Easterns.
GA actually won in 2012 with a star studded lineup of seniors including 500 prep record holder Arthur Fraylor, eastern water polo MVP from Navy Carly Dowzicky, Nelson Glendenning, Bryan Dragonosky, Adam Sjoholm, Justin Tang among many others
What a great year! I remember that year was an elephant escaped from the Philadelphia zoo and got stuck on GA’s pool deck. Arthur had to get out of warmup and lure it out with peanuts!!! Great times.
