The German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) announced today Germany’s Swim Team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. German Head Coach Henning Lambertz: “It is a good mixture of established athletes and many new faces.” The German national colors will be represented by 11 women and 16 men in the pool and 2 open water swimmers.
The German men have starters in all individual events – except the 200 m butterfly. On the women’s side, there are some gaps: No woman qualified for the 100 m freestyle, 100 m, 200 m breaststroke, 100 m backstroke and also the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay won’t have a German participation in Rio.
Head Coach Lambertz plans with 2 or 3 medals – medals candidates in Rio are primarily Marco Koch (200 m breaststroke), Paul Biedermann (200 m freestyle) and Franziska Hentke (200 m butterfly). 20-year old Damian Wierling will have the most starts in the German team – he is intended for four starts: 50 m and 100 m freestyle, 4 x 100 m freestyle and 4 x 100 m medley relay. Youngest swimmers are Leonie Kullmann, 16, born 08-29-1999, who made it into the women’s 4 x 200 m freestyle relay and Johannes Hintze, 17, who is qualified in the 400 m IM.
It is a fair decision that long time national team members and internationally successfull swimmers like Steffen Deibler, Jenny Mensing and Christian vom Lehn have been appointed in the team even if they haven’t reached the required times at German National Championships. But all three have finally convinced with their good perfomances at the German Open last week in Berlin. Steffen Deibler finished in the 100 m butterfly in the morining heats in a time of 51,49, Christian vom Lehn is the only German swimmer in the 100 m breaststroke under 1 minute in 2016 – he clocked a 59,87 at German Open. And backstroke specialist Jenny Mensing got her ticket to Rio in the end with a time of 2:09,18 in the 200 m distance.
The German team will travel to Brazil on July 18th for a training camp in Florianopolis. They will continue their journey to Rio on August 1st.

Let’s go BJ!! I’m so proud of you!
Why does the author not know how to write? “Most busiest” and “Youngest swimmer are” !?
Do you guys know when Fina will finish inviting B cut swimmers?
Swimmer1 – we have no idea, it’s not a very transparent process. We’re hearing bits and pieces from different swimmers and federations, but that’s it.
The rub thus far is that “hardly any” swimmers with “B” cuts are getting invited.
i think it’s over
