USA Swimming has named Ginny Nussbaum and Ken Heis as the head coaches of the girls’ and boys’ teams for the 2023 World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships.
The long course meters (50m) meet will be held from September 4-9 in Netanya, Israel. The US will return to the competition after not competing last year.
“We’re excited and appreciative of Coach Nussbaum’s and Coach Heis’ commitment to our 2023 World Junior Championships efforts,” USA Swimming National Junior Team Program Director Erik Posegay said. “They are both experienced head coaches and leaders of successful club programs who will have a positive impact on our USA Swimming teams.”
Nussbaum currently serves the Long Island Aquatic Club (LIAC) as head coach and program director for the age 13 and older group. LIAC is a Gold Medal Club awardee in the USA Swimming 2022 National Club Excellence Program.
Nussbaum previously served as a U.S. assistant coach at the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and the 2019 World Junior Championships.
LIAC swimmers who have represented the US at the World Junior Championships in the past include Jason Louser, who was 4th in the 400 IM, and Maggie Aroesty, who finished 10th at the 2015 World Junior Championships.
LIAC currently has two swimmers on the US Junior National Team: Cavan Gormsen (400/800 free) and Sean Green (400/800 free). Gormsen and another LIAC swimmer, Tess Howley, earned spots at the 2022 Junior Pan Pac Championships alongside Nussbaum.
This is the third-straight meet in which the US has participated where a female head coach has led the girls’ team.
Heis is head coach of the Mason Manta Rays, a Gold Medal Club awardee in the USA Swimming 2022 National Club Excellence Program. He previously served as a U.S. assistant coach at the 2019 World Junior Championships and the 2019 Mare Nostrum.
While the Manta Rays don’t have any current swimmers on the US Junior National Team, the club has consistently produced some of the top juniors in the US over the last few years. That includes 2022 World Championship medalist Carson Foster, US National Teamer Jake Foster, collegiate All-American Adam Chaney, and NCAA Division III A-finalist Avery Clapp.
Coach Heis runs a wonderful program in Mason. Congratulations Ken!
