The final day of the 2022 French Elite SC Championships saw more great racing, as the selections for the 2022 SC World Championship team are rounded out.
Belgium’s Florine Gaspard won the women’s 100 IM in 59.88, outpacing the field by nearly a full second. Anastasia Urbaniak was the leading French swimmer, finishing in 1:00.80. Also of note, Giulia Rossi-Bene finished third overall in 1:01.02, setting a new National Age Record for 16-year-old girls. Fellow 16-year-old Zoe Carlos-Broc was the previous record-holder, having set the record two weeks ago at 1:01.65. Carlos-Broc finished fourth on Sunday, swimming a 1:01.15, also dipping under her previous record.
Sprint star Maxime Grousset posted a dominant victory in the men’s 100 free, swimming a 45.61. He was out quick, splitting 21.79 on the first 50, then coming home in 23.82. Grousset was just over half a second off the French Record in the event, which stands at 44.94 from 2008.
Damien Joly had a strong swim in the men’s 1500, clocking a 14:33.38 for first. Logan Fontaine and Marc-Antoine Olivier were right behind, touching in 14:36.82 and 14:37.77 respectively. Joly swam a very consistent race, splitting 4:49.65 on the first 500m, 4:51.77 on the second 500, and 4:51.96 on the final 500.
In the men’s 50 breast, Carl Aitkaci led a tight field, touching first in 26.70. Antoine Viquerat was right behind, finishing in 26.72.
The women’s 200 back saw Pauline Mahieu post a decisive victory, swimming a 2:04.26. She took the race out in 1:00.40 on the first 100, but fell off that pace a bit on the back half, splitting 1:03.86. Notably, Emma Terebo was out very fast, going 59.61 on the opening 100 to turn nearly a second ahead of Mahieu. Terebo put up a 32.66 on the third 50, but crashed hard on the final lap, splitting 34.01 and falling behind Mahieu. Terebo ultimately finished second in 2:06.28, two seconds behind Mahieu.
Marie Wattel was dominant in the women’s 100 fly, swimming a 57.11 to finish first by a little over a second. Wattel used her speed on the first 50, splitting 26.45 before coming home in 30.66. Coming in second was Greece’s Anna Ntountounaki, who swam a 58.12.
In an incredibly tight finish in the men’s 200 IM, Emilien Mattenet earned the win, swimming a 1:56.30. He was right ahead of Switzerland’s Jeremy Desplanches (54), as well as Frenchmen Enzo Tesic (1:56.55) and Clement Bidard (1:56.75). Tesic was leading going into the final 50 of the race, but Mattenet in particular was far faster on the final 50, splitting 26.98 to Tesic’s 28.10.
Russia’s Anna Egorova won the women’s 400 free in 4:02.09, finishing far ahead of the top Frenchwoman, Charlotte Bonnet (4:06.27).
Mewec Tomac won the men’s 50 back in 23.27.
