GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 2/12/2021

In our GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series, we celebrate swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.

Sienna Schellenger, 16, Texas Ford Aquatics (TFA-NT): swimming in Texas’s high school postseason, 16-year-old Schellenger broke 50 seconds for the first time in her career in the 100 free. Schellenger went 49.97, a drop of more than a full second – she skipped the 50-points entirely. Schellenger also hit a lifetime-best 23.10 in the 50 free.

Alana Berlin, 13, Schroeder YMCA Swim Team (SSTY-WI): In Wisconsin, 13-year-old Berlin dropped personal bests in both the 100 (54.02) and 200 (2:00.94) yard backstrokes. The 200 back was a drop of eight tenths of a second, and Berlin has only swum the race four times in her career, cutting from 2:16 to 2:07 to 2:01 last year.

John Beamon, 17, Spartan Aquatic Club (SPAC-GA): Breaking 20 seconds in the 50 free is a momentous occasion for any swimmer. 17-year-old Beamon did it with a half-second drop at Georgia’s high school state meet. His 19.93 in the 50 free dropped exactly 0.5 seconds, and Beamon also broke 50 seconds for the first time with a 49.28 in the 100 fly.

Luke Stibrich, 15, Blue Tide Aquatics (BTA-GU): Stibrich broke through two major barriers swimming in Texas’s high school postseason. In the 200 IM, he cracked 1:50 for the first time in his career, cutting two and a half seconds to go 1:49.01. In the 500 free, he came up with an even bigger drop, going 4:29.35 with a drop of three and a half seconds.
