Gold Defeats Blue in Akron Intrasquad

AKRON, Ohio – The reigning five-time Mid-American Conference champions, University of Akron women’s swimming and diving team was back in the water for the first time of the 2018-19 season for its annual Blue and Gold Intrasquad meet at the Ocasek Natatorium on Friday, Sept. 28.

In a 12-event meet, the Gold team topped team Blue by a score of 137-85 to take the intrasquad crown.

In the first event of the season, the relay team for team Gold, made up of junior Ellie Nebraska (Delaware, Ohio), sophomore Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), senior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and freshman Sofia Henell(Linkoping, Sweden) took first place in the 200 medley relay.

Freshman standout Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia) touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle for team Gold, while freshman Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) finished second to pick up points for the Blue team.

In the 50 Freestyle, the Gold team turned in the top two finishers with Fazekas and Henell.

Over the next three events, the teams went back-and forth trading wins in the 200 IM (Blue), three-meter diving (Gold) and 100 butterfly (Blue).

Team Gold would win the next four events with Henell finishing first in the 100 freestyle, Movold in the 100 backstroke and senior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) and Garcia in the 400 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

Senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) would finish first in the one-meter diving for team Blue to disrupt the Gold team’s rhythm.

A win in the final event, the 200 freestyle relay, would seal the victory for team Gold. The relay team was made up of Henell, Nebraska, Movold, and Fazekas.

The Zips open their 2018-19 campaign as they host the Akron Zips Classic, Oct. 12-13, at Ocasek Natatorium.

Event 2 – 200 Free –  Movold (Gold)
Event 3 – 50 Free –  Fazekas (Gold)
Event 4 – 200 IM –  Pash (Blue)
Event 5 – 3- Meter Diving – Djonne (Gold)
Event 6 – 100 Fly – Nogaj (Blue)
Event 7 – 100 Free – Henell (Gold)
Event 8 – 100 Back – Movold (Gold)
Event 9 – 400 Free – Bonezzi (Gold)
Event 10 – 100 Breast – Garcia (Gold)
Event 11 – 1-Meter Diving – Crail (Blue)
Event 12 – 200 Free Relay – Henell, Nebraska, Movold, Fazekas (Gold)
