AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team kicked off its 2023-24 campaign with the annual Cardinal and Gold intrasquad meet. Gold took down Cardinal by a score of 107-95 with Gold winning seven of the 12 total events.
The Gold team started the night strong in the 200 yard medley relay with Madi Dohrn, Paige Hanley, Maddie Ziegert, and Lydia McClugage putting up a final time of 1:47.80.
Brinley Horras won the first event of the evening for Cardinal at the 200 free posting a time of 1:54.90, with Corinne Guist (1:55.88) and Sydney Jackson (1:56.14) following close behind her.
Fallon DeWitt took over the 200 IM for Gold with her 2:09.76 finish, keeping her almost five seconds ahead of the next closest finisher.
The 50 free was a close event with all four swimmers with fourth place finishing within one second of first place. Carley Caughron (23.90) won the event for Cardinal, while Maddie Ziegert (24.19) and Lydia McClugage (24.45) finished in second and third for Gold.
In the diving events, Kate Mitchell won both the three-meter and one-meter dives for team Gold with her best score on the night being 272.55 in the three-meter dive. Freshman Annie McCann trailed close behind Mitchell in both events putting up her best score of the night at 236.40 in the three-meter as well.
Gold dominated the 100 fly with Senior Winter Craig winning the event with a time of 58.45. Sydney Jackson finished in second at 59.61 and Mallory Miller finished at 1:00.55 for Cardinal.
In the 100 free, Carley Caughron won her second event of the evening posting a time of (52.55) followed by Maddie Ziegert (53.60) and Andie Quirke (55.06).
Gold dominated the 100 back event with Madi Dohrn putting up a time of 59.36 to win for Gold and teammate Fallon DeWitt following close behind with a time of 59.68.
Paige Hanley won the 100 breast for Gold with a time of 1:07.71, with Alaina Breitbach (1:08.25) and freshman Abbi Crum (1:09.32) rounding out the top three.
Brinley Horras showed her skill in distance events placing first with a time of 5:06.79 Corinne Guist finished second with a final time of 5:11.28.
The night was capped with the 200 free relay where Cardinal won with a time of 1:37.15 led by Corinne Guist, Andie Quirke, Carley Caughron, and Brinley Horras. Gold’s highest team finished in 2nd with Maddie Ziegert, Lydia McClugage, Fallon DeWitt, and Madi Dohrn contributing to a time of 1:38.73.
