Gorbenko Bests Own SCM 50 Breast Israeli Record With First Sub-30 Swim

2021 FINA WORLD CUP – BERLIN

Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko broke her own national record in the short course meters 50 breaststroke twice on Sunday at the 2021 FINA World Cup Berlin stop.

She came into the meet with a best time of 30.20, from last year, and went 30.11 in prelims. She followed that up with a substantial drop to 29.61 in the final, winning the event by nearly half a second. American Lydia Jacoby, the shock Olympic gold medalist in the 100 breast, was second in 30.04

The 18-year-old Gorbenko now sits among the top 20 performers in history in the event.

On Saturday, Gorbenko won the 100 breast with a 1:04.44 to take out her own national record by nearly a second. Her previous mark of 1:05.28 was from last year’s ISL semi-finals. She also broke the Israeli record in the 200 breaststroke earlier this year in Naples, when she hit a 2:19.22.

Over the course of the meet this weekend, Gorbenko racked up the most total points under FINA’s scoring system, ahead of Olympic champion Emma McKeon, to take home $12,000. The versatile Gorbenko competed in six events in Tokyo, with her highest individual finish coming at eighth in the 100 back.

Perhaps McKeon would’ve scored more if she chose 200 free on day 1 instead of 50 fly because it’s not like the 200 free was won in a blazing fast time.
