16-year-old Lena Grabowski lowered her own Austrian National Record in the women’s 200m backstroke en route to World Junior Championships silver tonight in Budapest.
After hitting a morning time of 2:11.03 to set herself up as the 2nd-seeded swimmer from the heats, the teen fired off the fastest time of her career with a speedy 2:10.27 to claim silver behind winner Jade Hannah of Canada. Hannah hit the wall in 2:09.28 for gold, while Italy’s Erika Francesca Gaetani rounded out the top 3 in 2:10.52.
As for Grabowski, the Austrian recently set the previous National Record of 2:10.92 just this past April while competing at the Graz Trophy. Her 2back record was 1 of 4 national standards to fall over the course of that competition. Splits for Grabowski’s effort there included 1:04.08/1:06.84.
Tonight, however, Grabowski got under 1:04 on the way out to hit the 100m wall in 1:03.88 and brought it home in 1:06.39 to set the new mark.
Both her efforts make Grabowski the only Austrian female ever to have broken the 2:11 barrier in the LCM 200 backstroke event.
I read that as Australian instead of Austrian and I was like “dang the aussies haven’t broken 2:10?!”
