Sophomore Mark Nikolaev of Grand Canyon posted the nation’s 6th fastest time in the 100 backstroke last night in Evanston. His 46.05 was .03 ahead of Ryan Murphy‘s season best of 46.08, and Nikolaev won the race by over three seconds. He had a very quick 21.58 medley relay lead-off for GCU’s winning 200 medley relay, and also led off their winning 800 free relay in 1:37.41.

Meanwhile, NU stud Jordan Wilimovsky raced yesterday in some off events. He took a victory in the 400 IM, cruising to a time of 3:52.24, over two seconds under the NCAA ‘B’ cut. In the 200 free, victory eluded the distance-oriented Wilimovsky, who touched 5th in 1:40.11. His teammate Charlie Cole, however, eked out the win with a 1:37.88 to top the field. The Wildcat men also got a win in the 100 breast thanks to sophomore Will Hofstadter (55.38), who won by nearly a second. With a strong push yesterday, NU moved ahead of GCU to put them hot on the heels of team points leader Michigan State.

The NU women found their way to two individual wins and a relay victory on day two. Melissa Postoll shattered the pool record in her 400 IM victory, swimming a 4:14.71 for first. Meanwhile, sophomore Peyton Greenberg took the 100 breast in 1:02.93. The Wildcats combined for a 7:19.64 in the 800 free relay, anchored by a 1:48.65 from freshman standout Valerie Gruest Slowing. Their A and B relays finished 1-2, actually, which helped them to maintain their lead in the standings going into the final day of competition.

The Air Force women had a strong showing last night, too, starting off with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:41.66). Elyse Hart notched a ‘B’ cut with her 54.46 in the 100 fly to get a win there, while Genevieve Miller registered a win in the 200 free. Miller’s 1:49.15 was the only sub-1:50 performance of the field.
