The Great Britain men’s 400 medley relay improved 5 seconds from prelims and broke the European Championship Record in finals, swimming a 3:30.44. The old Championship Record of 3:31.32 was held by France, who swam 3:31.32 in 2009.
The relay featured Nicholas Pyle, Adam Peaty, James Guy, and Duncan Scott in that order. Pyle, who is only 17-years old, will have two years to develop into the missing piece of a British gold medal chance at the 2020 Olympic Games,
As usual, the magic bullet for the British was breaststroker Adam Peaty, who though he split slower than his best at 57.60, was still 2 seconds ahead of record pace and more than a second better than anybody else in Thursday’s field. That includes 2.8 seconds faster than Russia’s breaststroke Anton Chupkov, who was notably slower than the 59.0 he split for bronze in the individual 100. That difference for Peaty but the Brits a full second in the lead, in spite of their continued deficiency on the backstroke leg, and with solid finishing splits from James Guy (50.91 – fly) and Duncan Scott (47.35 – free), they blew away from the record line.
