Great Britain Posts New National Record En Route To 4×200 Silver

The foursome of Stephen Milne, Duncan Scott, Dan Wallace and James Guy have just set a new British National Record en route to earning the silver medal tonight in the men’s 4×200 freestyle relay.

Coming off of World Championship gold in Kazan last year, GBR gained momentum in this event headed into Rio. In claiming gold in Kazan, the Brits snapped an American winning streak in the relay dating back to 2005.

The squad got an extra boost by how well young University of Stirling swimmer Scott performed this morning in Rio. He notched a new British National Record in the men’s 100m freestyle and clocked a mighty 1:45.05 split to set GBR up nicely for a run against the U.S. for gold.

Tonight, Milne led off in 1:46.97, followed by 1:45.05 for Scott, 1:46.26 for Wallace and a phenomenal last leg of 1:44.85 by James Guy.  The resulting time of 7:03.13 knocked more than a second off of the previous record of 7:04.33 from Kazan. Although the time fell short of Team USA’s gold medal-winning mark of 7:00.66, it is Great Britain’s best result in 108 years.
