Grechin Ahead of Adrian For Top Seed in Men’s 100 Free at Monaco

The 2014 Mare Nostrum series got underway on Saturday morning at the International Meeting de Monaco.

There were some solid times in the prelims, but nothing all that mind-boggling.

The best swim of the morning probably goes to Germany’s Marco Koch in the men’s 200 breaststroke. There he swam a 2:12.21. He’s known for being very fast in-season, but that established himself as a favorite with names like Josh Prenot (2:14.71) and Michael Jamieson (2:14.78) lurking behind.

Germany overall had a solid prelims session, with Steffen Deibler taking the top seed in the 50 fly in 24.07.

In the men’s 100 free, which should be the best final on night one, 5 swimmers snuck into finals at under 50 seconds, led by Russian Andrey Grechin. American Nathan Adrian is the 2nd seed in 49.65, and the defending NCAA Champion in the event Joao de Lucca is 3rd in 49.77.

Other big names in this race include Jeremy Stravius (49.80), Anthony Ervin (50.21), and Pieter Timmers (50.24).

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu took a considerably lighter approach to this first session than she normally does, though she did perform well in the two races she swam. Her 200 free time of 1:56.91 was really impressive and gave her the top seed by a mile; and later in the 100 fly she took the 2nd seed in 59.07. She’s behind Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen there.

The women’s 400 IM, which is held in a timed final, will come tonight, where we presume Hosszu will add another swim. So far, American Melanie Margalis is the top seed in 4:44.30.

1. Myles Brown in 3.49.57

Women’s 400 IM
1. Katinka Hosszu in 4.33.80
Ok. I didn’t watch that first day of finals live and missed the fact she swam the 400 IM at the start of the session. Sorry for the Iron Lady. She could be tired after a 400 IM/200 free double.
She’s human after all and it’s good to see her suffer after a crazy double like that.
