Greek Open Medalist Anna Avgousta Vlachou to Swim for University of Nebraska

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Freestyle and butterfly specialist Anna Vlachou from Athens, Greece has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

Vlachou is a member of the Junior National Team of Greece, and has already built quite the resume for herself on the international stage. Vlachou is a Greek Open and Junior Championship medalist, as well as a World Gymnasiade Silver medalist. At the 2021 European Junior Championships in Rome, Vlachou was a member of the Greek 4×100 meter mixed medley relay that placed 9th and had a best individual finish of 29th in the 50 fly.

At the 2022 European Junior Swimming Championships, Vlachou advanced to the semifinals of the 100m butterfly where she placed 10th overall with a time of 1:01.15, narrowly missing qualifying for the final. Vlachou also competed in the 50m butterfly (24th) and the 100m free (20th) at the Championships.

“I am extremely excited and grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my education and athletic career at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Special thanks to my family, friends, coaches, advisor and everyone who supported me throughout this process, as well as to Coach Pablo and Coach Pat for inviting me on an Official Visit, giving me this opportunity and welcoming me into the amazing team!”

The Nebraska women placed 9th at the Big Ten Conference Championships this year, where the Huskers were led by 5th year Shannon Stott. Stott finished top 8 in all three of her individual swims at the championships, finishing 8th in the 200 free (1:46.54), 8th in the 500 free (4:44.45), and 7th in the 200 butterfly (1:57.36). Other A finalists for the Huskers included JoJo Randby in the 100 breaststroke (7th) and Gena Jorgensen in the 1650 freestyle (6th). At the Big Ten Championships this year, it took a time of 54.70 to score in the 100 butterfly and 49.77 to score in the 100 freestyle, arguably Vlachou’s best events.

Vlachou joins an incoming 2023 recruiting class for the University of Nebraska including Anastasia Tichy, Amelia Riggott, Jenna Brown, and Beatrix Tanko. Vlachou will train alongside Tichy and Tanko next year, who both excel in the butterfly events as well.
