Italian distance star Gregorio Paltrinieri dominated the 800 free at the Italian National Championships tonight, swimming a time of 7:45.53. That was over twelve seconds ahead of 2nd place Domenico Acerenza (7:57.60). Johannes Calloni, who swims for Stanford University in the States, was third in 7:59.80.
Paltrinieri is the fourth man to break 7:50 in this event during the 2017-18 season (which began last fall), and he knocks Sun Yang off the top of the rankings.

Margherita Panziera, leading off Fiamme Oro Roma’s 4×100 medley relay, broke a minute in the 100 back, becoming the first woman to do so in Italian history. Her 59.96 erases Elena Gemo’s 1:00.22 record from the book.
In the women’s 200 IM, Ilaria Cusinato had a stellar race, scaring the Italian national record. Her time of 2:11.26 was just one hundredth off of the Italian record, set in 2009 by Alessia Filippi during the suit era.
Thomas Ceccon was back for another Italian junior record in the men’s 200 IM. The 17-year-old, who already set an Italian junior record in the 100 back earlier this week, clocked a 2:00.43 to break Alberto Razzetti‘s old mark of 2:01.05. Razzetti was third in the race tonight with a 2:01.08, with Federico Turrini in for 2nd (2:00.93).
Federica Pellegrini grabbed a win in the 100 free, posting a 54.42 to touch nearly a full second ahead of Erika Ferraioli (55.33). In the men’s race Alessandro Miressi went 48.36 to break a 2009 meet record, with Luca Dotto not far behind (48.56). Ivano Vendrame was also under 49 (48.98).
In the women’s 1500, Simona Quadarella added to her win tally with a 15:57.66, which is her 2nd-best time ever and her third time breaking 16:00. She now ranks 2nd in the world this season.

GS Fiamme Oro Roma won the men’s 4×100 medley relay in 3:35.04, getting a stellar 50.85 fly split from Matteo Rivolta and a 48.05 anchor leg from the 100 free winner Miressi. In the women’s 4×100 medley relay, Fiamme Oro Roma won in 4:02.12, boosted by Panziera’s Italian record lead off.
Don’t this distract you from the fact that the world record is a 7:32 ??
Probably the most bizarre World Record.. you have to go out at 3:45 and return at 3:47
Right up there with women’s 200 fly. 1:42.00 is also bizarre… 2009 just produced some weird times.
I mean Zhang Li went out 3.46.7 and came back in a 3.45.4 I believe or something bizarre like that. It might be the only world record along with the womens 200fly that stands for decades to come.
Nah. Katie ledecky,s 8:04 800 free will stand for 2 centuries unless she breaks the world record herself. Her time is more bizzare than anything from 2009 except the women,s 200 fly.
Good point. That time made Thorpe think that his coach Doug Frost was gearing him up for the longer distances when he wanted to be a classic 200/400 freestyler but with enough speed to be useful over 100 metres. It wasn’t long afterwards that he broke with the man who made him the swimmer he was and it could be argued with the benefit of hindsight that it wasn’t a wise decision.
It was done at the height of the rubber suits era but still a remarkable time from someone who disappeared from the scene soon afterwards. The best textile time is Sun Yang’s 7.38.57 from the 2011 World Championships – a mere 6.5 seconds slower!
7:32 will not be broken for a long time. It’s so dumb. They should have either taken away the records, or kept the suits the same length they used to. Or both.
Poor guy started suffering health issues soon after the 2009 World Championships. It’s a pity – even before the supersuit years, Zhang was a formidable distance swimmer, and it would have been nice to see him on the world stage a while longer.
