In the first-ever men’s 800 free race at the 2022 Short Course World Championships, Italian swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri won in a time of 7:29.99 to break the championship record. The previous championship record is listed as a 7:30.31 from the 2018 Short Course World Championships, which the time that Paltrinieri took his 1500 free out in at that meet. However, Paltrinieri’s name is not attached to the old championship record time, as “BEST TIME” is listed next to championship record on results pages.

Opening in a 3;45.81 on his first 400 and closing in a 3:44.18, Paltrinieri negative split his race by over a second. This was a contrast from his typical racing strategy of going out super fast in the front half of his race, and trying to hold on as much as he can towards the back end.

IPaltrinieri’s personal best is a 7:27.94, which he swam at the 2021 European Short Course Championships. His swim from this year’s short course worlds was his second-fastest performance ever, and also his second time getting under the 7:30 barrier.

Earlier on at short course worlds, Paltrinieri won his second title in the men’s 1500 free, a year after completely missing the podium at the 2021 Short Course World Championships. He is now the first male swimmer to make the 800/1500 free distance sweep, as the the women’s 1500 free and men’s 800 free races were just added to the short course worlds program this year.
