Grenada to Send Four Swimmers to 2014 Commonwealth Games

The small island nation of Grenada (not to be confused with the similarly-named Granada, Spain) is sending a team of 16 athletes across three sports to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, including four swimmers.

While the swimmers don’t hold as much medal promise as the male track & field team does, this does mark a third-straight Commonwealth Games where the nation surrounded by water will send their top aquatic athletes, after having declined to do so in their first six Commonwealth Games appearances.

The participants:

  • Oreoluwa Cherebin
  • Andrew Hopkins
  • Corey Ollivierre
  • Chris Regis

This means that the country’s best-known swimmers, 2012 Olympian Esau Simpson and Nicholas Coard, won’t be on this year’s roster. In fact, all four participants are Commonwealth Games rookies.

Chris Regis, however, did race at last year’s World Championships in the 50 meter free, where he placed 73rd in a 25.61.

Also on this year’s roster is Oreoluwa Cherebin, the first ever female swimmer (or female in any sport outside of track & field) to represent Grenada at the Commonwealth Games.

Best of luck to all the Grenadian athletes! With all due respect to Ore, I believe Ayesha Noel swam for Grenada in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India.
