The good news for swimming fans across the globe is that all the action didn’t shut down after the world championships. Unlike a other sports, the action keeps unfolding on with world stage. This was true this past week at the FINA 10K marathon swimming world cup in Megantic Canada. The Megantic course is interested insofar as it’s a point to point swim. The swimmers faced strong winds with slowed the typical 10K times in this race. In fact, conditions were so challenging only 9 women finished the race under the finish requirement (swimmers must finish within 3o minutes of the winner to have a time qualification).
On the men’s side it was Thomas Lurz of Germany who topped the podium with a time of 2:15.35. Lurz’s performance comes off an incredible showing at the recent world championships where he won 2 gold and 1 bronze medal. Germany’s Christian Reichert took silver (2:15.36) just one second behind Lurz and Brazil’s Samuel De Bona was 3rd (2:15.38).
For the women it was Italy’s Martina Grimaldi who took top honors completing the swim in 2:26.52. The next 3 places went to Team USA. Christine Jennings won the silver in 2:26.53, Emily Brunemann grabbed the bronze in 2:26.55 and Eva Fabian was 4th in 2:26.56.
