Grinev, Krasnykh Among Additions As Russia Finalizes Olympic Roster At 30

2021 RUSSIAN NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Russia has announced its official Olympic swimming roster for this summer’s Tokyo Games following the conclusion of their Olympic Trials in Kazan on Friday, adding five relay only swimmers to bring the team total to 30.

Vladislav Grinev, Aleksandr Krasnykh and Alexander Shchegolev have been added on the men’s side, while Elizaveta Klevanovich and Daria S. Ustinova join for the women.

Grinev was an absolute no-brainer, having won three medals at the 2019 World Championships, including an individual bronze in the men’s 100 freestyle. Grinev is the third-fastest swimmer in the world this season in that event (47.85), but ran into the top two in Kazan, with Kliment Kolesnikov and Andrei Minakov locking him out of an individual spot.

Shchegolev and Krasnykh finished third and fourth in the men’s 200 free, both producing elite times of 1:45.82 and 1:45.88, respectively. Having won back-to-back World Championship silver medals in the event, the Russian men will be a huge factor for gold in the 800 free relay this summer.

For the women, Klevanovich placed third in the 100 freestyle, while Ustinova can contribute on both free relays as well.

One of the hard luck stories has to be Grigoriy Tarasevich. He was third in the 100BK going under 53 seconds and second in the 200BK but with a time just .05 outside the FINA ‘A’ cut. I hope they add him in later on as a heat swimmer for the medley relay or even give him a chance to get an “A’ cut for the 200BK be putting him in the team for the European Championships.

They are not taking any prelim-only swimmer for 4×200 FR?

It’s Daria S Ustinova, not the backstroker. She’s in as a relay-only swimmer.

They could still add 3 more for women’s 4×200 free relay. It’s not clear if they’ll enter this relay or not.

The relay would have to qualify first.

Russia has qualified all the relays but the times in the 200 free were disappointing…so unless the girls improve their times they won’t send it. We’ll see at europeans.
