Grizzles Women and Men Fall To Eastern Michigan

Oakland’s Karin Tomeckova cleaned up in the backstroke for the second time in as many days and added an individual victory in the 200 IM, but Oakland fell short against host Eastern Michigan Satuday afternoon at Jones Natatorium. The Oakland women were bested by the Eagles 168-125 while the men’s team dropped a 193-103 decision to EMU.

Oakland distance freestyle swimmers Amr el Sayed and Patricia Aschan were both two-time winners as the Golden Grizzlies swept both the 500 and 1000 meter swims for the men and women, respectively. Aschan also finished second to Tomeckova in the IM.

“We have some individuals that can step up and do what they always do, but to win at a high level, we need more of a team effort,” Oakland head coach Pete Hovland said. “Eastern Michigan is a well-coached and talented team, and they wanted to win today a lot more than we did.”

The women’s team started with back-to-back victories, winning the 200 medley relay in 1:46.22. Tomeckova, Takara MartinJulia Velaand Nikki Flynn gave Oakland their second win of the season in the 200 medley relay. Aschan then followed up with a time of10:17.10 in the 1000 free, cutting her previous PR which she set Friday against Bowling Green and moving into third all-time in team history with her effort.

Along with heading Oakland’s medley relay team to the win, Tomeckova led a 1-2 finish in the 100 backstroke, besting the field with a time of 56.62; Kyra Rietveld took second with a time of 57.54. Tomeckova then was victorious in the 200 back, finishing in 2:02.26 for her best time of the season and fourth win of the year in the event. In the penultimate event, Tomeckova (2:06.60) out-touched Aschan (2:07.36) to give Oakland a finish 1-2 in the 200 IM.

Oakland also got a win in the women’s 100 free with Flynn’s time of 52.21.

For the men, el Sayed improved on his Horizon League top time of the year to 9:29.90 in the 1000 free to win the second event of the meet. He then tallied his second win of the season in the 500 free with a time of 4:34.18.

Grant Harding remained unbeaten on the year in the men’s 100 free, finishing in 45.64.

The Oakland men got second-place finishes from Mitch Alters (200 fly, 1:51.27; 100 fly, 50.19; 200 IM, 1:56.17), Aleksander Danielewski (200 back, 1:52.48; 100 back, 51.08) and Hrafn Traustason (200 breast, 2:07.21).

Oakland returns to OU Aquatic Center to host Wayne State Friday, Nov. 15 to host Wayne State at 5 p.m.
