Gustavus Crushes Carleton; Resets Records at Luther

Jan 10 & 11, 2014

Gustavus Adolphus women’s swimming and diving team took charge on Friday – their Senior Night. The women’s team crushed Carleton, 212-82, and the Gusties recorded 13 event victories on their way to a win.

Seniors Alissa Tinklenberg and Haley Totzke both registered individual victories. Tinklenberg won the 200 backstroke (2:06.92) and the 200 freestyle (1:56.55). Totzke was victorious on the three meter with a score of 163.15.

The supporting cast on Senior Night had their fair share of victories as well. Jennifer Strom and Danielle Klunk were multiple event winners. Klunk swept the butterfly races, swimming a 1:00.97 to win the 100, and a 2:13.32 for victory in the 200. Strom took over in the breaststroke, posting a 1:09.52 in the 100 and a 2:29.39 in her 200. Strom also recorded a third place finish in the 200 IM.

Adding individual event wins were Libby Larson, Leah Anderson, Haley Booher and Laura Dobler. Larson claimed the win in the 1000 freestyle in 11:15.44, as well as touching third in the 500 freestyle. Anderson’s 5:22.30 won the 500, and she had the runner up finish in the 200 freestyle. Booher secured a win in the 200 IM (2:12.87). She also was runner up in the 100 back (1:00.61) and third in the 200 back (2:11.59). Dobler rounded out the individual event wins with a victory on one meter with a score of 163.80.

In both of the relays, the Gusties were just too quick for Carleton. The 200 medley relay – with Tinklenberg, Strom, Klunk and Katie Olson – finished in 1:49.92. Then for the finale, Tinklenberg, Klunk, Tarin Anding and Olson destroyed the 200 free relay and touched in at 1:39.29.

The very next day, the Gusties got back up on the blocks for an unscored meet at Luther College where five pool records fell.

Klunk was back in action, swimming a 59.91 in the 100 butterfly and a 54.07 in the 100 freestyle – both of which were new pool records. She added a runner up finish in the 50 fly (27.57) and third place finish in the 100 IM to round out her night.

Strom joined Klunk in breaking records as she stormed the 1000 freestyle with a new pool record of 11:00.14. She was runner up in both the 100 breaststroke (1:11.50) and 100 IM (1:02.75).

The final pool record of the day went to Tinklenberg in the 50 freestyle in 24.51. Tinklenberg also took runner up finishes in the 50 backstroke (27.19) and the 100 backstroke (58.43).

The freestyle relay team of Klunk, Olsen, Tarin Adning and Tinklenberg posted a 1:39.36 for victory in the 200 freestyle relay, as well as the final pool record for the Gusties.

Gustavus’ swimming and diving will return to the pool Jan 17-18 for the Grinnell Invitational.

Gustavus did not swim Carelton. They swam against Carleton College. When reporting on a mid-season dual meet where the won-loss outcome was pretty much expected, please be sure to at least spell the name of the competing institutions correctly. Thank you.
