Gwiazdowski, Crawford Break Boys 50 Free Record at PIAA 2A Day 1

2018 PIAA 2A SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

In a really interesting turn of events, both Colin Gwiazdowski and Reggie Crawford set new PIAA 2A records in the boys 50 free. Gwiazdowski broke the previous record of 20.50 in prelims, posting a 20.45 to take the stop seed. Crawford then won the event in finals, also posting a 20.45, while Gwiazdowski came in 2nd with a 20.50. That means they now share the record.

Adam Mahler won the boys 100 fly, posting a 49.96 to be the only swimmer in the field to break 50 seconds. He had both the fastest first 50 split and 2nd 50 split in the field, going out in 23.49, and coming back in 26.47. Freshman Ian Shahan came in 2nd with a 50.70.

Danny Berlitz won the boys 200 IM with a 1:49.97, finishing 3 seconds ahead of runner-up Chase Bietz. Berlitz split the race well across the board, going 24.02, 28.42, 31.25, and 26.28 respectively. All 4 of his 50s were the fastest in the field.

Josaih Lauver took the boys 200 free, posting a 1:39.24 to beat out sophomore Luke Mikesell (1:39.91). Lauver split the race very consistently, going 50 splits of 23.13, 25.39. 25.56, and 25.16, while Mikesell swam the race differently, posting splits of 23.49, 25.37, 26.09, and 24.96. The PIAA 2A record sits at 1:38.35, and both swimmers return next year, so they each have a a good shot at breaking it next year.

Hanna Everhart won the girls 200 free, going 1:49.69 to be the only swimmer in the field under 1:50. She was out fast, splitting 52.53 on the first 100, and coming home in 57.16.  Her first 100 split was the fastest in the field by a second.

Abigail Doss won the girls 200 IM with a finals time of 2:00.99, finishing well over 2 seconds ahead of the field. Her first 100 was the 3rd fastest in the field, coming in at 58.51. SHe then had a great breast split of 33.99, followed by a decent free split of 28.49. Doss is just a sophomore, giving her 2 more seasons to break Lauren Barber‘s PIAA record of 1:57.76.

Paige Mikesell won the girls 100 fly by 1.63 seconds, posting a 55.07. She had both the fastest 1st 50 and 2nd 50 in the field, going out in 25.56 and coming back in 29.51.
