Finnish sprinter Julia Bruneau has made a verbal commitment to the Virginia Tech H2Okies for the 2018-19 season. Bruneau is the second European to verbally commit to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute class of 2022; she will join Loulou Vos of Netherlands (but trains in the United Kingdom), who recently gave her verbal commitment, as well.
“I am very excited to announce my commitment to Virginia Tech, they offer a great education and excellent swimming program. I look forward to being a Hokie for the upcoming years and can’t wait to join the VT swimming family.”
Bruneau specializes in the shorter range of freestyle events. She swims for the club team Lahden Uimaseura Ry (LaUS) and represents Finland’s senior national team in international competition. At the Nordic Country Championships (SCM) in Kolding, Denmark last December, Bruneau won the bronze medal in the women’s open 50m free, after having swum the fastest overall time in the meet in prelims (25.26); she placed third in the 18-and-over 100m free (fourth overall), and was 13th in the 18-and-over category in prelims of the 200m free.
Her best 50/100 LCM times come from the 2016 Finland Championships last March, where she was 10th overall in the women’s open 50m free and 8th in the open 100m free. Her best SCM times (converted to SCY) are as follows:
- 50 SCM free – 25.23 (22.72)
- 100 SCM free – 55.62 (50.10)
- 200 SCM free – 2:05.65 (1:53.19)
