Hamilton Women, Men Hold Lead After Day 1 of Eponymous Invitational

The Hamilton College Continentals got off to a strong start at their annual invitational, jumping to the lead in both the women’s meet and the men’s meet after the first day of competition.

Day One began with a meet record in the women’s 200 medley relay when Mount Holyoke’s Annie Kuenning (30.17), Cathleen Pruden (30.41), Bri Groves (27.76) and Katie Tyler (25.11) combined for 1:53.45, clipping the old meet mark by .12. Pruden later crushed the pool and the meet records in the 200 IM, winning in 2:06.52.

Hamilton’s Jessica Halladay won the women’s 500 free (5:21.66), while teammate Sarah Hooper eked out a 25.45-to-25.68 win over SUNY Oswego’s Hannah Jensen in the 50 free.

Riley Synan of SUNY Oswego edged Hamilton’s Madeleine Lepesant 2:12.44 to 2:13.61 for the 200 fly crown; both finished under the previous meet record of 2:14.04. Emma Raynor added to the Continentals’ tally with a victory in the 100 back (1:01.74).

The Hamilton quartet of Halladay, Hannah Mooney, Lauren Klei, and Hooper closed out the session with a 8:10.43 in the 800 free relay for first place. Mount Holyoke’s Emily Craig, Erica Carvell, Groves, and Pruden were 5 seconds back for the silver medal.

Smith College picked up tons of points in diving; while SUNY Cortland’s Miranda Fergus won the 1-meter event, Smith place five divers in the top 8 (2-Elly Stone, 3-Cecelia Arrison, 4-Julianna Alvord, 6-Anna Partridge, 8-Hannah Searles). Hamilton’s Sarah Pickup was fifth; SUNY Oswego’s Kelly Lindner, seventh.

SUNY Cortland’s Dylan Burns (25.61), Jack Jakubek (27.14), Matt Hasbrouck (24.27), and Reeve Callen (21.53) earned the men’s 200 medley relay crown over Hamilton’s Alex Jones, Jesse Bennett, John McBratney, and Scott Becker, 1:38.55 to 1:39.73. Burns also won the 100 back, edging Hamilton’s Benjamin Cooper 56.57 to 56.85.

The Continentals’ Ryan Cassidy led a 1-2 Hamilton sweep in the men’s 500 free; he finished first in 4:58.54, just ahead of teammate Bennett (5:00.85). Tripp Miller and McBratney went 1-2 for Hamilton in the following event, clocking 2:02.89 and 2:03.97, respectively, in the 200 IM.

Connor Mergler of Buffalo State broke the meet record in the men’s 50 free with 21.28. Lucas Santiago of SUNY Oneonta won the 200 fly in 1:59.86.

Diving points were evenly spread, as SUNY Oswego’s Luke Snyder won the 1-meter event with 250.35 points ahead of Lee Wade of SUNY Cortland, Julian Ziaggi of Hamilton, Justin Moser from Buffalo State, Cole Bodak of Hamilton, and Kaleil Balmir of Cortland.
