Hannah Brunzell Continues to Roll for Northwestern as They Down Oakland

Northwestern swept the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in a Big Ten vs Horizon League dual last Friday at Oakland in Auburn hills, MI. Hannah Brunzell continued to be a revelation for the Northwestern Wildcats, sweeping the women’s breaststrokes and taking the women’s 200 IM. Brunzell kicked off her day by splitting 27.59 on the breast leg of the women’s 200 medley relay. Northwestern won the relay with a 1:40.96 to Oakland’s 1:42.53. Brunzell’s breast split came in 1.35 seconds ahead of Oakland’s Sydney McDowell (28.94). Nicole Aarts led the Wildcats off in 26.26, and was followed by Brunzell, Miriam Guevara (24.39), and Maddie Smith (22.72). Oakland out-split Northwestern on backstroke, where Grace Shinske clocked a 26.04. The Golden Grizzlies also kept it tight on fly and free, where Susan LaGrand (24.69) and Katie Colwell (22.86) split just off their Wildcat counterparts.

Brunzell went on to swim a 1:00.80 to win the 100 breast, posting great splits of 28.88 and 31.92. She then finished in 2:12.00 in the 200 breast, keeping it consistent with 33.53, 34.09, and 33.98 on the last 3 50 splits. Bruzell also claimed victory in the 200 IM, touching in 2:03.55. She had a great middle 100, splitting 31.50 on back and 34.74 on breast, leading the field in both.

Northwestern star Calypso Sheridan swept the women’s backstrokes her fastest dual meet swims of the season. She swam a 54.75 in the women’s 100 back, beating out Grace Shinske by .67 seconds thanks to a 27.60 coming home compared to Shinske’s 28.27. Sheridan then went 1:58.16 to win the 200 back.

Dongjin Hwang pulled the distance double for Northwestern’s men. Hwang took the 1000 free in 9:17.64, besting the field by 10 seconds. He then swam a 4:32.15 in the 500 free, touching 1.19 seconds ahead of teammate Ryan King. Kai Tik Mok swept the men’s breaststrokes for Nortwestern, finishing in 55.45 in 100 breast, and 2:01.23 in the 200 breast.

Despite the large deficit in the final team standings, Oakland had some very bright spots in their performance against Northwestern. Katie Colwell swpet the women’s sprint freestyles. Colwell posted a 23.48 to win the 50, out-touching Wildcat Maddie Smith by .05 seconds. Colwell then went on to win the 100 free in 51.33, this time beating out Northwestern’s Malorie Han by .19 seconds. Colwell also threw down the fastest split in the field in the women’s 400 free relay. Northwestern won that relay 3:25.74, with Oakland right on their heels in 3:25.79. The Golden Grizzlies led the relay through the 250 mark, thanks to a 52.19 lead-off from Sohvi Nenonen, and a 51.13 from Susan LaGrand. Northwestern’s first two splits were Jasmine Hellmer (52.32) and Maddie Smith (52.08). Malorie Han put the Wildacts back in it with a 50.80 on the 3rd leg, compared to 52.46 from Emily Aycock. Calypso Sheridan dove in to anchor Northwestern with the lead, but got run down by Colwell, splitting 50.54 to Colwell’s 50.01, getting her hand on the wall just before Colwell could.

Mack Flowers was a force for the Oakland men as well. Flowers first threw down a 21.80 fly split on the men’s 200 medley relay, marking the fastest fly split in the field by almost half a second. Flowers then tied Northwestern’s Andrew Zhang for first in the men’s 50 free, with both swimmers touching in 20.94. Flowers then won the men’s 100 fly in dominant fashion, roaring to a 48.47 to touch first by 1.49 seconds. Flowers came home in a speedy 25.45. The Golden Grizzlies also grabbed a 2nd place finishin the men’s 100 fly, with Colton Phelps touching in a tie with Northwestern’s Ben Miller at 49.96. Flowers was also part of the Golden Grizzlies’ 400 free relay team that won over Northwestern in the last race of the meet. Oakland was led off by Rudy Aguilar in 46.03, then Christian Bart split 45.81, Flowers split 45.38, and Marko Khotynetskyi anchored in 45.14 for a final time of 3:02.36. Northwestern clocked a 3:02.45, with Liam Gately leading off in 46.07, and Ben Forbes, Robert Cecil, and Keegan bundy split 45.55, 45.11, and 45.72 respectively.

ROCHESTER, MI – Northwestern dominated the pool Friday night against Oakland University winning 28 of 32 events.

The Wildcats started the day off with back-to-back wins in the 200 medley relays. The men’s team of Manu BacarizoMarcus MokEzra Mizgala and Andrew Zhang swam a season best time of 1:30.84 to out touch their competition.

The ‘Cats swept the 1000 free with Ilektra Lebl and Yulia Groysman going 1-2 for the women and DJ Hwang and Ryan King following suit for the men. In a seasons best time of 1:39.61, senior Liam Gately led the 1-3-4 finish in the men’s 200 free.

In the 200 breast, Mok out touched his competition by over four seconds for a seasons best finish of 2:01.23 for his third first place finish of the night.

On the diving board, sophomores Yohan Eskrik-Parkinson and Evan Labuda went 1-2 in the 1 meter dive, earning their NCAA Zone qualifier and earning big NU points.

Sophomore Henry Blaul led the ‘Cats in a 1-2-4 finish in the 200 IM, touching in a seasons best time of 1:51.72.

The Wildcats closed out the meet with the women’s 400 free relay team of Jasmine HellmerMaddie SmithMalorie Han and Calypso Sheridan finishing in a seasons best 3:25.74 to put a stamp on the ‘Cats victory.

NU finished the day defeating the Grizzlies 206-93 on the women’s side and 200-100 on the men’s.

The ‘Cats will be back in the pool tomorrow morning as they face off against Michigan State at 11 am in East Lansing.

PRESS RELEASE – OAKLAND:

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to Northwestern Friday night 200-100 and 206-93 respectively.

Senior Katie Colwell led the way for the Golden Grizzlies tallying two first place finishes in the 50 (23.48) and 100 free (51.33). Colwell also added two second place finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:42.53) and the 400 free relay (3:25.79).

Teammates Grace ShinskeSydney McDowell and Susan LaGrand accompanied Colwell in the 200 medley relay while Sohvi Nenonen, LaGrand and Emily Aycock were part of the second place 400 relay.

On the men’s side Rudy Aguilar earned the top spot in the 400 free relay with teammates Christian BartMack Flowers and Marko Khotynetskyi in a time of 3:02.36. Aguilar went on to tally three second place finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:30.96), 200 free (1:39.89) and 100 free (45.84).

The Golden Grizzlies are back in the pool tomorrow as they welcome league foe UIC to the Oakland Aquatic Center beginning at 1 p.m.
