Hannah, Pratt Pick Up 200 Back Wins On Night 1 Of Canadian Championships

2019 CANADIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The opening night of the 2019 Canadian Championships saw three World Junior team members pick up wins in Katrina BellioJade Hannah and Cole Pratt, Eric Hedlin claim the men’s 1500 coming off his bronze medal at Worlds, and a new National Age Group Record from Summer McIntosh.

Bellio, 15, won the women’s 800 freestyle in a time of 8:44.58, followed by Marit Anderson (8:48.97) of the University of Calgary Swim Club. Bellio set the 13-14 NAG back in June in a time of 8:41.77.

In third place was the 12-year-old McIntosh, Bellio’s Etobicoke teammate, who edged out her 11-12 NAG from June of 8:51.79 in 8:51.71.

The women’s 200 back saw a close race between Hannah and 2016 Olympic medalist Kennedy Goss. Goss had a late rally on the last 50, gaining nearly seven-tenths on Hannah with a 33.33 split, but the 17-year-old Hannah held on for the win in 2:11.50 to Goss’ 2:11.79.

15-year-old Regan Rathwell of the GO Kingfish, who recently competed at the Canadian Junior Champs, was third in 2:12.78, followed by twins Mabel Zavaros (2:12.81) and Rosie Zavaros (2:14.10) of Oakville.

In a quick turnaround from competing at the World Championships, Pratt used a 30.12 last 50 to win the men’s 200 back in 2:00.96 over Richie Stokes (2:01.26) of the University of Calgary Swim Club. Pratt, who set a best of 1:58.07 in April, was only slightly slower tonight than his time in Gwangju (2:00.45), where he finished 26th.

Hedlin, who won the bronze in the open water 5k at Worlds, topped the men’s 1500 field in a time of 15:24.42. Patrick Hussey (15:42.49) and Eric Brown (15:42.53), both of Pointe-Claire, were second and third.

OTHER EVENTS

  • Sarah Fournier of CNQ won the women’s 50 free in 25.76 over Neptune Natation’s Roxane Lemieux (25.88).
  • Laval’s Raphael Marcoux scored his second consecutive best time of the day in the men’s 50 free, clocking 22.58 to win and move into 12th all-time amongst Canadians. Ruslan Gaziev (22.83) and Alex Loginov (22.87) rounded out the podium.
  • Miranda Stever of the Toronto Swim Club erased an eight-tenths of a second deficit on the last 50 of the women’s 200 breast to win in 2:30.19 over Etobicoke’s Sofia Carnevale (2:30.91). World Junior team members Avery Wiseman (2:31.07) and Bailey Herbert (2:31.44) were third and fourth.
  • Commonwealth Games finalist Eli Wall held off a late push from Jaren LeFranc to win the men’s 200 breast – 2:14.26 to 2:14.34. The time for LeFranc was a new best.
  • Emma O’Croinin produced the only sub-2:00 split in the field to lead Edmonton Keyano to the win in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay, as the World Championship bronze medalist anchored in 1:58.49 to erase a near six-second deficit to Oakville (8:19.18) and touch in 8:18.35.
  • The men’s 4×200 freestyle relay was a close as it gets, as Bernard Godolphin anchored Neptune Natation in 1:51.57 to edge them past Université Laval by 0.01 seconds, 7:34.34 to 7:34.35.
