Harvard Women Move to 3-0 with Win over Columbia

Harvard hosted Columbia on Friday at Blodgett Pool in Cambridge and came away with their third conference win of the season with a 215-85 victory over the Lions.

The Crimson won 14 of 16 events, beginning with the 200 medley relay. Danielle Lee (25.95), Stephanie Ferrell (29.94), Kendall Crawford (25.00), and Victoria Chan (23.29) went 1:43.48 to just edge out by .20 Columbia’s Salena Huang (26.59), Jennifer Shahar (28.68), Christina Ray (24.59), and Kate O’Rourke (23.82).

Harvard junior Sherry Liu began the assault on the individual titles with a 10:04.74 win in the 1000 free. She followed that up with a first-place swim in the 500, going 4:55.55. Teammate, freshman Regan Kology, was second in the 1000 (10:12.74) and third in the 500 (5:01.21). Mallory McKeon was Columbia’s highest finisher in the distance races, with a third-place 10:16.74 in the 1000 and a 5:04.32 for fourth in the 500.

Sophomore Chan of the Crimson won all the sprints: 200 free (1:50.75), 50 free (23.77), 100 free (51.55). Columbia’s Ray was runner-up in both the 50 (23.88) and 100 (52.03).

Harvard junior Lee won both the 100 (55.08) and 200 (1:58.40) back and was runner-up in the 200 IM. Huang was Columbia’s top backstroker; she finished third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.

Senior Ferrell from Harvard won the 100 breast in 1:03.65 over Columbia’s Mikaila Gaffey (1:04.98) and Shahar (1:05.59), but was second to Columbia’s Kristine Ng (2:18.27) in the 200 breast. Harvard junior Crawford edged Ng in the 200 fly, 2:03.38 to 2:03.64.

The 100 fly went to Columbia junior Ray, whose 54.89 was exactly .60 faster than Crawford’s.

Freshmen Geordie Enoch and Hannah Allchurch notched wins, too. Enoch went 2:04.38 to claim the 200 IM title, and Allchurch won both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

Harvard’s 400 free relay of Gabby Sims (53.08), Daniela Johnson (51.89), Sarah Sumner (53.11), and Sherry Liu (52.77) ended the meet with a 3:30.85 victory over Gaffey, O’Rourke, Huang, and Celia Frick.
