The 2021 Queensland Short Course Championships kicked off today at Brisbane Aquatic Centre with two sessions of timed finals having concluded.

Overall it was a rather quiet day 1, although 18-year-old Thomas Hauck made his presence known by taking two events.

First up for the All Saints star was the 400m IM, where Hauck routed the field by over 18 seconds. Hitting a time of 4:12.12, Hauck raked up his first title of this meet. He later took on the 200m back where he posted a winning effort of 1:55.54.

Hauck contested both of these events at this year’s Olympic Trials, finishing 4th in the 400m IM in a long course time of 4:18.54 while his 2back outing rendered him 6th in 2:00.16.

Newmarket’s Elizabeth Dekkers also competed today, winning the women’s 200m fly in a mark of 2:07.75. Splitting 1:01.73/1:06.62, 17-year-old Dekkers came within half a second of her own lifetime best. That PB sits at the 2:07.23 posted this past July.

Dekkers was another standout from the Aussie Olympic Trials. She placed 2nd in the women’s 200m fly behind winner Brianna Throssell, although her time missed the qualification standard.
