Hawaii high school star Mau wins twice in Washington during mainland swing-through, Schoeman takes 100 free

Hawaiian swimming star and national independent high school record-holder Jasmine Mau is making a rare mainland appearance at the Western Region Speedo Sectional meet in Federal Way, Washington, and she’s making her presence felt.

Mau won two of the four women’s events on day two, bookending the night with victories. She opened things up with a 100 freestyle win, going 49.34 to top 16-year-old Victoria Toris of the Scottsdale Aquatic Club. Toris was 49.99 in the event.

Mau, who swims for Kamehameha Swim Club and will join the Cal Golden Bears next year, came back to dominate the 200 fly, going 1:57.61.

Another big name entering the meet is South African Olympian Roland Schoeman, who is still hitting hard at age 33. He won the men’s 100 free, using his veteran experience to top one of the rising names in U.S. sprinting, Ryan Hoffer of Scottsdale. Schoeman put up a 42.51, while Hoffer went 43.99 for second place. In addition, Bellevue’s Edward Kim tied with 15-year-old Thomas Anderson of KING for third; both were 44.42.

Former Wisconsin Badger John Bushman won the men’s 200 breast in 1:56.34. Bushman, who swam his freshman season with Wisconsin, is now swimming for the Aces Swim Club out of Denver, Colorado.

The women’s 200 breast went to 16-year-old Emma Schanz from the Spokane Waves. She went 2:11.91 to beat 15-year-old Bailey Kovac out of Fort Collins, CO and KING’s Michigan commit Carolyn McCann.

Hannah Leach, 16, of Missoula Aquatic Club of Montana won the women’s 200 back in 1:54.31 to crush the field. The men’s event went to Patrick Mulcare of Tualatin Hills of Oregon. The 17-year-old won by an equally-impressive margin, going 1:42.99.

The final event of the night was the men’s 200 fly, which was won by KING 17-year-old Mathias Oh. His 1:45.08 topped Mark Jurek by about seven tenths.

KING won both of the 200 medley relays to close the meet. The women’s team of Hannah Weiss, McCann, Kenna Ramey and Ashley Sutherland put up a 1:40.49 to win their event, getting a 27.8 breaststroke split from McCann. Their male counterparts won the final event of the night in 1:29.48, a new Sectionals record. Anderson, Keith Schendel, Oh and Tommy Thach made up the relay, with Anderson splitting 21.5 on backstroke and Oh going 21.5 on butterfly.

Ryan Hoffer not as fast as last December. 43.99 vs 43.13.
Perhaps he keeps the best for the Mesa Grand Prix next month in Arizona.
Can’t wait to see what he will be able to do in long course next summer.
If he swims in long course as well as he does in yards, something around 49.50 is possible.

Very nice time drop for Hannah Leach in the 200 back.

And it looks like 15-year-old Thomas Anderson is ready to swim a very fast 100 back tomorrow.

Keep your eyes on Ms. Ruck. She appears to be able to swim it all — look for more compelling swims from her this weekend.
