The Hawkeye Invite day two prelims finished up, and Iowa will have another chance to put up big points in the men’s 100 fly, qualifying six for the A final.
Jerzy Twaroski will lead the Hawkeyes into the finals with a 47.14 from prelims this morning. Jackson Allen was not far behind with a 47.59. Chris Freeman is third with a 47.98.
The only two non-Iowa swimmers in the event will be John Williamson from Notre Dame in fourth with a 48.14 and Andrew Torres in sixth with a 48.82.
Sam Corea continued to swim well with her 53.04 performance in the prelims of the women’s 100 fly. She was followed in by Anna Brolin, Hailee Love, and Alison Mand of Washington State who were 54.66, 54.87, and 55.66, respectively.
As good as he was in yesterdays 200 IM prelims, Zach Stephens of Notre Dame was as good or better in the 100 breast, and holds the top seed with a 52.79. Unless he scratches the final, as he did in the 200 IM last night, he could come very close to the NCAA A cut of 52.29.
Iowa’s Roman Trussov was 53.62, and behind him were Pat Olson and Cameron Miller of Notre Dame in 54.62 and 54.88.
Emma Sougstad dominated the women’s 100 breast, and set a school record in the process. Sougstad was 1:00.41 in the morning, breaking her 1:00.90 school record from last season. She added time from prelims to finals in last night’s 200 IM but was still the winner and will likely touch first again tonight.
Amanda Sanders of Denver was second in 1:01.38, and Colleen Champa of Iowa was third in 1:02.69.
Denver took the three top and four of the top eight spots in the men’s 400 IM. Jeremiah Zgliczynski led the way with a 3:53.68. Lane Bretschneider finished second with a 3:54.38. Ben Severino was third in 3:56.52.
Maddie Myers of Denver and Becky Stoughton of Iowa will face off in the women’s 400 IM tonight. The two were 4:20.03 and 4:28.58 in prelims, over a second faster than third seeded Clara Jenck, who was 4:21.86.
Stoughton dropped plenty of time in last nights 500 free finals, and will be able to contend if she can do so again this evening.
Grant Betulius continued to power through the backstroke for the Hawkeyes. The senior has been 11th at NCAA’s in the 100 backstroke and was 46.53 this morning. He had a body length lead by the 25 and only got better as the race went on. He could be even faster tonight, as the Hawkeyes will honor their seniors before finals, and he was 45.56 on the disqualified 400 medley relay, good for an A cut and the school record. His teammate, Chris Freeman, is seeded second for finals with a 48.38. Third is Anton Loncar of Denver with a 48.89.
Tonights events include the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 800 free relay.
Full results from this morning and live results for tonight are available here. The meet resumes at 6 p.m. central time with Iowa honoring its seniors. Racing will follow after.
