While competing on her home turf at the Hong Long LC Swimming Time Trial IV today, 23-year-old Siobhan Haughey brought down the house with a super quick new national record in the women’s 100m free.

Stopping the clock in an impressive 52.92, the former Michigan Wolverine dipped under the 53-second threshold for the first time in her career en route to topping the podium.

Entering this meet, Haughey owned the HK national record with her lifetime best of 53.30, a time logged at the Pro Swim Seris in Des Moines in March of last year. There in the U.S. Haughey opened in 25.66 and closed in 27.64 to shave .02 off of her previous national record of 53.32.

Tonight at the HKSI, Haughey led the field in much quicker 25.34 and brought it home in 27.58 to clock this mighty 52.92.

Haughey now ranks as the 18th fastest women’s 100m freestyle performer in history, while this season she ranks 4th in the world.

Closer to home, Haughey has just become the #3 Asian 100m freestyle performer all-time, slotted only behind Japan’s Rikako Ikee (52.79) and China’s Zhang Yufei (52.90).

For additional perspective on Haughey’s performance, consider that no American female went sub-53 at the U.S. Trials taking place in Omaha this week. The top 2 finishers were represented by Abbey Weitzeil and Erika Brown who reaped times of 53.53 and 53.59, respectively, with both sitting outside the top 10 performers on the season.
