Hong Kong Names Seven Swimmers to Their 2016 Olympic Team

The Hong Kong Olympic Committee has announced that seven swimmers will be representing their nation at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The country only had four swimmers at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

All seven swimmers represented Hong Kong at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan. There will be two athletes making their third Olympic appearances. Stephanie Au competed at the 2008 and 2012 Games while Sze Hang Yu competed at the 2004 and 2012 Olympics.

The team will be led by 19 year old Siobhan Haughey who had tremendous success in her freshman year at the University of Michigan. Haughey was named the university’s ‘Freshman of the Year’, was the ‘Swimmer of the Meet’ at the Big 10 Championships and finished 5th at the NCAA Championships in the 200 yard freestyle.

Haughey has also had tremendous success internationally as a junior aged athlete winning the 100 freestyle at the 2013 World Junior Championships as well as collecting silver medals in both the 100 freestyle and 200 IM at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Geoffrey Cheah will be the lone male on the team and will be the first male to represent Hong Kong at an Olympic Games since 2004.

The full team includes:
