BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The spring portion of Indiana swimming and diving’s season is set to begin Friday (Jan. 14) when the Hoosiers host No. 11/15 Louisville for a dual meet inside Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete after combing for an 11-1 dual meet record in the fall. The men are a sparkling 6-0 on the season and have won 12 straight dual meets going back to the 2019-20 season.

“Louisville is one of the top programs in the NCAA an annual basis, so it will be a huge challenge,” head swimming coach Ray Looze said. “I fully expect both contests to come down to the last relay. It should be very exciting and a good opportunity for growth.”

Friday’s meet is the first off three straight weekends of competition for IU swimming and diving leading up to Big Ten Championships in February.

“We haven’t competed yet this year, and the team is excited to take on Louisville,” head diving coach Drew Johansen said. “We have meets each of the next three weekends, and we will be competing platform in each meet to prepare for championship season.”

The IU swimming and diving program sent 13 current, former, and Indiana Swim Club trainees, and two coaches to the Olympic Games 2020 Tokyo. The athletes returned with 11 medals. Three Hoosier Olympians, Michael Brinegar, Andrew Capobianco and Tomer Frankel, are on the roster for the 2021-22 campaign. Capobianco earned silver in the 3M Synchro Springboard.

Six swimmers with Indiana ties have been named to the 2021-22 U.S. National Team roster: Zach Apple, Blake Pieroni, Lilly King, Annie Lazor and current Hoosiers Michael Brinegar and Mariah Denigan.

Five Indiana divers – Andrew Capobianco, Tarrin Gilliland, Kristen Hayden, Quinn Henninger and Carson Tyler – qualified for the FINA World Championships from their performances during the 2021 USA Diving Winter National Championships in December that took place inside IU’s home facility, Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

During the meet, Hayden, a senior, became the first Black female U.S. Diving national champion, winning the Mixed Synchronized 3-Meter dive with Henninger.

LAST TIME OUT: HOOSIERS BEST BEARCATS TO CLOSE FALL

Indiana swimming and diving finished its fall in winning fashion on Dec. 3 as both its men’s and women’s teams defeated Cincinnati, 162-122 and 162-123, respectively, inside Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.

Indiana dominated the diving events, placing at least the top three divers in each event while redshirt senior Andrew Capobianco won both men’s events. Compounding falls full of success, junior Brendan Burns and senior Jack Franzman each had three wins for the men.
