The second stop of the 2016 FINA World Cup tour is upon us, kicking off Tuesday morning in Berlin, Germany.
After the tour’s opening Paris stop, Vlad Morozov and Katinka Hosszu lead the points and money lists. Morozov broke the first world record of the series in the 100 IM in Paris. Alia Atkinson, who is second in women’s points, tied a world record in the 100 breast.
Points Leaders
Women
- Katinka Hosszu – 129
- Alia Atkinson – 76
- T-3 Daryna Zevina – 45
- T-3 Jeanette Ottesen – 45
- Emily Seebohm – 33
Men
- Vladimir Morozov – 86
- Chad le Clos – 60
- Philip Heintz – 54
- Cameron van der Burgh – 48
- Three-way tie – 27
The top swimmers in the points will all be competing in Berlin, with the start lists looking very similar to those in Paris.
Hosszu is set to swim 15 events (100/200/400/800 free, 50/100/200 back, 50/200 breast, 50/100/200 fly, 100/200/400 IM) after earning 11 medals in Paris. That includes entries into every single event except the 50 free and 100 breast.
She’s chased by Atkinson, plus Russian duo Yulia Efimova and Daryna Zevina and Australian pair Emily Seebohm and Madison Groves, among others.
Morozov is entered into 4 races: the 100 IM, 50 free, 100 free and 100 breast.
On the men’s side, he’ll be joined by Australian world champion backstroker Mitch Larkin, defending series champ Cameron van der Burgh, 2014 series champ Chad le Clos and perhaps Great Britain’s Ben Proud, who was a no-show after entering Paris but does appear on the start lists in Berlin.
Is there anything more devoid of soul or emotion than these absurd FINA World Cup meets? On the other hand, they have that hip “Night of the Swimming Dead” Zombie apocalypse vibe going for them though.
does mot Michael Andrew swim?
Daryna Zevina would not be happy to learn she is Russian!
Is it too late for David Nolan to hop on a flight for the next few of these? So many events in his wheelhouse that are not that deep. I’d think he’d break even on airfare after day one and any other top three places would be profit. Trying to think of other post-grad/pro/national teamers or similar who’d be well-suited to make some money here.
Why doesn’t Hosszu just swim everything?
She swims whatever Shane tussup wants her to swim
100 breast is just before the 100 fly, and 50 free is just after the 200IM.
I am surprised there aren’t more Germans entered. So few entries…the atmosphere must be poor. FINA is pouring all this money into the circuit ….when will they realize it is a waste. Maybe they should use the money for drug testing?
The German swimmers aren’t in their best shape this is the cause, not the athmosphere.
