The Iron Lady, Katinka Hosszu, has been silent as to her schedule for the 2015 FINA World Championships but, now that the psych sheets are out, so is her secret.
Compared to the four individual events in which she swam in the 2013 edition of the competition, Hosszu is slated to swim an incredible seven individual contests throughout the 2015 meet. Hosszu’s monster lineup is as follows: 200m IM, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 400m IM.
Of these, the biggest surprise is most definitely her entry in the 100m freestyle race. Seeded 22nd in a time of 54.45, it is the only event in which she is not ranked within the top 10 on the starting lists. The Iron Lady’s entry time is indeed her career best, logged at last year’s European Championships. Her fastest of 2015 is the 54.52 she clocked at the Mare Nostrum – Nancy competition. The 100m free falls on the same day as her 200m fly finals, so it very well could be she is just looking to get a morning swim in, per her usual regimen.
Hosszu holds two number one seeds, in the 200m IM and 400m IM event and is the reigning World Champion in both. Hosszu does have the benefit of chief 400m IM rival, Mireia Belmonte from Spain, out of contention due to shoulder injury. A tight race is sure to ensue in the 200m IM, where Hosszu’s seed time of 2:08.11 is just a tenth faster than that of Great Britain’s Siobhan Marie O’Connor. It is the first women’s final, so both should be relatively fresh, even after Hosszu’s 100m backstroke heats and semi’s on the same day.
The meet’s schedule is designed to have heats and semi’s on the same day for distances of 200m and less (and every relay), with medal finals the following day. For events with distances of 400m and greater, athletes will contest their heats and finals on the same day, split between the morning and evening sessions. When looking at how her schedule spreads out, Hosszu really is not taking on much more than she normally would in a condensed Pro Series meet, for example. Swimming three races a day at full speed is Hosszu’s modus operandi, so her entire season has built up to this punishing agenda.
Here is how the Hungarian lady beast’s schedule pans out:

Servus, Jano! Calling someone a ‘machine’ is not that negative…Where I live the younger generation often uses it as a compliment on someone’s resistance, exeptional performance ( work or sport) . Means that she is continuously performs, going with a great force and seems unstoppable. Doesn’t mean at all that she has no heart and soul. Nothing like that …Anyway, let’s see them jumping into the water tonight ! can’t wait .
Hi Athena
Ok you are right I was just not that aware of the term 🙂
How about that 200m IM in the heats? 🙂 Crazy time 🙂
I am afraid that she will over stretch herself might be a bit overmotivated I hope they know what they are doing 🙂
she has done it !
Watching the championship in Australia, where swimming is greatly respected and water polo is gaining more and more respect …. So I can not complain about the coverage, I just record finals overnight form TV…. it is always a good day here for swimming ! The Aussie female swimmers to respect Katinka in their interviews …after all, she is changing the face of swimming !
Ok I am an outsider, I don’t train anybody. I am just a fellow hungarian.
If you say she BEAST and does not have off day or unmotivated days that only means that she is VERY motivated. Anybody else can do the same.
Calling her machine is not very nice I think. She is absolutely a human being a very nice one and a modest one I think. Yes the Iron Lady name also irritates me bit, but probably that much self publicity is required in this field, and well … she kind of deserves that name anyway 🙂
The accusations about illegal substances … she is innocent until proven guilty as anybody else (I really hope she is innocent)… Read more »
Hungary are also down for the 4x200m, which would presumably add another race or two to Hosszu’s schedule.
I think she has a good chance in all the events but the 100m free. Personally I think she should drop that event because it’s too deep and will be an extra 2-3 swims for nothing.
Katinka hosszu probably trains more than any other elite female swimmer based on her schedule which is always big. Hosszu even swims up to the 1500 free.
I,m sure that a lot of female swimmers might be scared of putting in too much weight training so as not to spoil their feminine physique.
I can’t get over her physique. I’m at awe at those arms and those shredded abs (not an accusation).
If there’s any female swimmer remotely close to Phelps in his prime, it’s this woman I think. I’m rooting for her to break at least one world record.
Well if you train that much… you will also look like that 🙂
well rockjano….I am not nocking miss hoszu at all, BUT im pretty sure she might jsut do the standard 9-11 practices a week plus 2-4 dryland/weight sessions. I am on a team of 40 people who all train that much. and I bet there are thousands of swimmers int he world who have to train that much, it is the standard now. she looks like that because she is the 1% of the 1%. Training a lo does help but by no means says you WILL look like that. The reason she does is because at those 11 practices a week and 4 weight sessions. she straight BEASTS. she doesnt have off days or unmotivated days. She is a machine… Read more »
8 for 8 is a bold call. That would be something special, even 7 medals out of those 8 races, in any of her events. ESPECIALLY since there’s no way she’ll win a medal on a relay. As near as I can tell, this would be close to the greatest SOLO performance of all time (Olympics or WC):
1972: Mark Spitz, 7 gold, 4 IE, 3 Relay
1988: Matt Biondi, 5 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze; 4 IE, 3 Relay
1988: Kristin Otto, 6 gold, 4 IE, 2 relay
2004: Phelps, 6 gold, 1 bronze, 4 IE, 3 relays
2008: Phelps, 8 gold, 5 IE, 3 relay
2015: Hosszu, 3 gold (IM’s, 200 fly), 1 silver… Read more »
I’m psyched she’s in the 2Free, which could be the women’s race of the meet.
But 7 events?! I’ll have what she’s having. Assuming it’s legal. #BreakfastOfChampions
