Katinka Hosszu wound up with just over $386,000 in prize money on the 2016 World Cup tour, closely rivaling her record 2014 haul.
Hosszu earned $386,750, more than $60K above what she earned a year ago on the tour and just off her $389K windfall on the 2014 tour.
For the men, Vladimir Morozov won his first-ever World Cup series title, bagging a $332,500 that surpasses both last year’s winner (Cameron van der Burgh at $262K) and 2014’s (Chad le Clos with $290.5K). That was due in part to several 100 IM world records early in the tour that earned Morozov $10,000 bonuses at the time.

Event Prizes
Prize money is given to the top 3 in each individual event:
- Gold: $1500
- Silver: $1000
- Bronze: $500
NEW IN 2016: Prize money is also given to the top 3 mixed relay teams (though no series points are earned).
- Gold: $3000
- Silver: $2000
- Bronze: $1000
In our money lists, we’ve given each relay member one quarter of that money, which amounts to $750 for a win, $500 for second and $250 for third.
World Record Bonuses
Each world record is worth a $10,000 bonus.
Cluster Bonuses
The 9-meet series is broken into 3 clusters of 3 meets each. Each cluster awards bonuses for the top 6 athletes in points over those three meets. An athlete must swim all 3 meets in the cluster to earn a cluster bonus:
- 1st: $50,000
- 2nd: $35,000
- 3rd: $30,000
- 4th: $20,000
- 5th: $10,000
- 6th: $5,000
Series Bonuses
And the series as a whole will give out bonuses to the top 3 men and women in total series points:
- 1st: $100,000
- 2nd: $50,000
- 3rd: $30,000

It would be interesting to estimate how much prize money it takes for an athlete to turn a profit after travel and hotel expenses. Maybe that keeps most US swimmers from competing in these.
mikeh – that would be interesting, though it’s a very challenging question to answer. That’s because often times, the organizers of these meets will cover expenses for big name swimmers – but there’s no “rule” about it. It would be up to the swimmer or their agent to call the organizer and ask what the organizer is will to cover.
Was gonna say something about how America needs to start a World Cup type thing every fall, but then I remembered we as swimmers have football to watch. And that’s why we do better at the Olympics. Because of football, low quality beer, and our world famous arrogance knowing that we’re the best.

Where does all this money come from
boi – the majority of it is paid into the pool by the national federations that host the meets.
The World Cup has been sponsored by Airweave in the last two years and it was by Mastbank in the years before. The sponsor provided most of the prize money. In addition, there are others such as Speedo (series sponsor) and Omega… Probably national federations play a key role as well, but not in the prize money.
