Hosszu, Groves Tie in 200 Fly On Day 2 of the FINA World Cup in Doha

FINA WORLD CUP DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Katinka Hosszu won 5 events on day 2 of the 2016 FINA World Cup stop in Doha, but one of those wins was a tie with Australia’s Madeline Groves. That tie came in the 200 fly, where Groves was out first at the halfway point, but Hosszu made a late charge that ended with the women tying in 2:03.34.

As usual, Hosszu’s IM range was on display, giving her another 2 golds in the 100 IM (57.82) and 400 IM (4:31.198). She was also the first swimmer to the wall in the 100 back (56.44) and 400 free (4:03.94).

The Iron Lady fell short in the women’s 100 free, taking silver behind Danish sprint ace Jeanette Ottesen (51.58). Ottesen also won the 50 fly (25.13), bringing her gold total for the meet to 4 while Hosszu picked up another silver.

On the men’s side, South African Chad Le Clos battled with Great Britain’s James Guy in the 200 free. Unlike his usual race strategy, Le Clos made his move on the back end this time, coming from behind to win it in 1:42.84. He then pulled in another gold with a victory in the 100 fly (50.23).

Russia’s Vlad Morozov continues to lead the men in points, securing 2 golds of his own this session. A 100 breast rematch with Brazil’s Felipe Lima saw Morozov come out on top again, as his 56.97 put him a couple tenths ahead. He also swept the sprint freestyles at this meet after winning today’s 50 free in 21.05.

Additional Event Winners:

  • Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson completed her sweep of the breaststroke sprints with a 28.98 to win the 50 breast.
  • Belarus’ Pavel Sankovich and Australia’s Bobby Hurley threw down in the 50 back, with Sankovich winning this round of the speed battle in 23.05. Hurley came away with a win of his own in the 200 back (1:51.70) later in the session.
  • Japanese Olympic medalists Daiya Seto and Rie Kaneto each picked up another gold. Seto won his 3rd of the meet in the 200 IM (1:52.49), while Kaneto won her signature 200 breast (2:15.76).
  • Hungary’s Gergely Gyurta broke away from the field in the 1500 free, winning by over 10 seconds with his 14:32.69.

With her win in the 100m IM in Doha, that gave Hosszu her her 200th World Cup gold medal (inc. 2 mixed relay gold medals). With her win in the 400m IM in Doha, it gave her her 199th individual gold medal.

Isn’t it the time already to measure Hosszu’s medals at world cup by kilos but not by numbers. It will be a better match to her “iron” title. Doesn’t the following sound nice: the iron lady earned another kilo of her medals. It feels very “iron” IMO.
