Start Lists Released (Finally) for 2013 World Championships

At long last, about a week after most of us would have liked to see them, FINA has released the start lists for swimming at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, Spain which begins on Sunday, July 28th in Barcelona Spain.

The delay is on the basis of FINA rules that allow teams to make substitutions into events through the Technical Meeting (coaches’ meeting) just prior to the start of the meet.

Not the best scenario for fans, but fans always have long been treated as the bottom-rung on the swimming ladder. Onward!

Katinka Hosszu still has a crazy schedule, as she has all year, but it’s not quite as bad as it could be. For example, on day one, she won’t be swimming the 100 fly, and instead will swim just the 200 IM. She’ll add to that entries in the 200 free, 200 fly, 400 IM, 100 back, and 200 backstroke. Here’s the twist though: the Hungarians, shockingly, will swim no relays.

The hometown favorite, and Spanish Olympic swimming hero, Mireia Belmonte has Hosszu matched in insanity of schedule. She’ll swim the 400, 800, and 1500 freestyles, the 200 fly, and the 200 and 400 IM, plus Spain has three relays entered (of which Belmonte is likely to be a part of at a bare minimum two, but probably all three).

Japan’s Kosuke Hagino joins the 6-individual-swim club, as he’ll be swimming the 200/400 free; 200/400IM’; and the 100.200 backstroke.

In the women’s 200 back, there were some question-marks as well. Canadian Sinead Russell will swim the race, but China’s Shiwen Ye, who was so good at their National Championships (but said at the time she was just using it to get in shape) will not.

Cesar Cielo, despite not technically hitting the Brazilian qualifying time, will be swimming the 50 fly at Worlds; he’s the defending champion in that event.

South Africa’s Chad le Clos will focus strictly on the butterfly races, swimming the 50, 100, and 200 butterflies. That means no swim in the 400 IM for him, where he was 5th in London.

Russia’s Vlad Morozov ended up dropping both the 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke from his schedule, as well as the 100 backstroke, and will focus entirely on the 50 and 100 freestyles where his biggest chance to medal lies. Expect him to still swim the backstroke leg on Russia’s medley relay.

As far as we could tell, the Americans’ entries stayed pat. Individual names have still not been added for relays.

There’s an indonesian (I gede Suwartama) on the last heat of both 50 and 100 back! This must be a first for an Indonesian 🙂

Hahaha, yes it’s the first time Indonesia has a swimmer in the one of 3 fastest preliminary heats of Worlds. Seeded at 22 and 28, Siman Sudartawa is the best swimmer, Indonesia ever have, at least until now. 🙂

BK, you need to replace Hosszu’s photo with Belmonte, as Belmonte’s schedule easily beats Hosszu in toughness factor.

Mireia Belmonte is certified CRAZY!
or at least her coaches!

Swimming the 6 most energy sapping events (200/400 IM, 400/800/1500 free, 200 fly) on top of three relays??
yikes.

And I thought Hosszu was an iron woman, well this Belmonte must be adamantium woman!

Where is Zueva? She competed at the WUG’s recently, but she’s not in the start list.

My understanding was that Stacy Zueva isn’t swimming Worlds this year for “family reasons”

What’s going on with Aleksandra Herasimenya? She is not entered in the 50m or 100m free. Haven’t checked her other events yet, but is she competing in Barcelona?

I hope she doesn’t swimming because she’s tested positive for PED in WUG. Hahaha.
I have shared same bitter feelings with my countryman, aswimfan, every time Herasimenia got medal, because of her doping offense when she’s still teenager.

Maybe she didn’t pass the drug test at WUG

It seems like if you pass the drug test, you’re on drugs, doesn’t it?
So if she didn’t pass the drug test, she must not be on drugs.
They should have a championships for everyone who passes the drug test.
