Day 1 heat sheets for the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series meet in Mesa, Arizona, and the big news is that Hungarian Katinka Hosszu is actually swimming a rather light schedule as compared to what we’ve been accustomed to from here.
Hosszu has become famous for near-maximum entries at almost every meet, but in the Olympic year, she hasn’t been racing quite as often, and has begun to hone her schedule a little for Rio.
She’s down to just a single event on Thursday in Mesa, the 400 IM in which she’s the two-time defending World Champion in long course. She scratched out of the 200 free – her only other entry on the day.
The other big scratch on day 1 is Cody Miller in the men’s 100 breaststroke. The United States’ fastest 100 breaststroker last season was due to be the top-seed in that race on Thursday, an honor which will now go to Georgia post-grad Nic Fink.
Other Significant Day 1 Scratches:
- Hali Flickinger, a key member of the 2016 Georgia NCAA Championship squad, has scratched all three day 1 entries: the 200 free, the 100 fly, and the 400 IM.
- Zane Grothe, 200 free, 3rd seed
- Grant Shoults, 200 free, 8th seed
- Emily Cameron, 400 IM, 9th seed
Hope she gets the doper’s record!
slacker 🙂
I smell a world record attempt by Hosszu.
