Hosszu Strikes Gold 5 Times On Day 2 of FINA World Cup in Dubai

FINA WORLD CUP DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

On day 2 of the 2016 FINA World Cup stop in Dubai, Hungarian Katinka Hosszu came away with a 7-medal haul that included 5 golds and 2 silvers. Hosszu was in good company in the 100 back, swimming in another showdown with Russia’s Daryna Zevina. After a late charge, Hosszu got to the wall in 56.56, beating Zevina (56.91) by just 3 tenths.

She also had a close race with Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson in the 100 IM. Although Hosszu was leading by over a second at the halfway point, Atkinson made her move to close the gap on the 2nd 50. She fell short, however, as Hosszu won the race with a 58.09 to Atkinson’s 58.55.

Hosszu picked up 3 more golds with wins in the 400 free (4:03.14), 400 IM (4:33.84), and 200 fly (2:05.62).

Not all of Hosszu’s medals were gold tongiht, as Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen was there to stop the Iron Lady from sweeping all 7 of her races. Ottesen topped Hosszu in the 100 free and 50 fly today, posting winning times of 51.77 and 25.16 in those events respectively.

On the men’s side, Russia’s Vlad Morozov reeled in a pair of wins. Morozov is currently the points leader on the men’s side after the first cluster of meets, and has continued to distance himself from the pack. Morozov’s first win came in the 100 breast, where he swam a 56.52.

He then squared off with South Africa’s Chad Le Clos, who sits 2nd in the points standings, in the 50 free. Le Clos had won his first race of the day, the 100 fly, in a speedy 49.14. He couldn’t match Morozov’s speed in the 50 free, however, as the Russian won the race in 20.88 ahead of Le Clos’ 21.17.

Additional Event Winners:

  • Japanese Olympic medalist Daiya Seto picked up the 200 IM title with his 1:52.41, beating out Germany’s Philip Heintz (1:52.97) and the USA’s Josh Prenot (1:53.90).
  • A sprint breaststroke rematch between Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson, Russia’s Yuliya Efimova, and Team USA’s Katie Meili took place in today’s 50 breast final. This time it was Atkinson who got to the wall 1st, winning the race in 29.06.
  • Japanese Olympic champ Rie Kaneto added another notch on her belt in the 200 breast, winning the race in 2:16.30.
  • Aussie Bobby Hurley swept the men’s backstroke races today, winning the 50 back in 23.33 and the 200 back in 1:52.33.
  • Also picking up double event wins was South Africa’s Myles Brown. Brown won a close race with James Guy in the 200 free to take 1st in 1:43.11. He then won the 1500 free in 14:46.49 after a tight battle with Germany’s Poul Zellmann.
  • The Russian team of Vlad Morozov, Stanislav Donetc, Yuliy Efimova, and Natalia Lovtcova closed out the meet by winning the mixed 4×50 free relay in 1:33.37.

This is peak swim nerd, but looking at the results of that 1500 makes me wish I’d seen that race. Top three were within .13 of one another at 1450. $1500 for first, $1000 for second, $500 for third. Who want that cash money!!!
