Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu was a force to be reckoned with, as per usual, mowing through six events and earning wins in four of them.
Dominating her strengths, the backstroke and IM, she posted a 56.56 in the 100 back and won the 100 IM as well as the 400 IM. Hosszu touched at 58.10 to win the 100 IM over American Katie Meili (59.50) and Jamaican Alia Atkinson (59.60), while swimming a 4:33.60 to take the 400 IM. Hosszu also posted a 4:01.65 to just touch out Dong Jie for the 400 free win (4:01.80).
Meili, Atkinson, and Russian Yulia Efimova met for a hotly-contested battle in the 50 breast. It was Atkinson to hit the wall first, though, at 29.15 to knock off Efimova (29.66) and Meili (29.92). American Breeja Larson (30.62) was fourth.
Larson raced against Efimova and Japan’s Rie Kaneto later in the 200 breast, with Kaneto throwing down an exceptional performance. She finished first at 2:15.91, well ahead of Efimova (2:19.46) and Larson (2:22.67).
Vlad Morozov doubled up, taking both the 50 free (21.06) and the 100 breast (56.33). The Russian was not far off of Cameron van der Burgh’s 55.61 world record in the 100 breast. Meanwhile, South Africans Chad le Clos and Myles Brown each posted a win. Le Clos took the 100 fly (49.35), while Brown topped the 200 free field (1:43.60).
Morozov also swam the 50 back, finishing in a tie for 5th. The win went to Belarusian Pavel Sankovich (23.18), just ahead of China’s Xu Jiayu (23.31). Xu was the winner of the 200 back in 1:51.50.
Danish sprinter Jeanette Ottesen was a double winner herself, snagging titles in the 50 fly (25.16) and 100 free (51.93).
