FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both started the 2023-24 season with strong showings at the annual Fairfield Invitational. The men’s team took the top spot with 745 points while the women’s squad garnered first place in the meet with 631 team points.

The Stags placed swimmers in the top three of practically every event with the men sweeping seven events. All in all, the women’s team had 19 top three finishes while the men posted 33 student-athletes in the top three this afternoon.

The 800 free started the individual events with both Fairfield programs sending two to the top three. Olivia Glaser finished second (9:29.55) followed by Erin Hoyland (9:33.55) for the women while Joey Nizzardo won the event in 8:53.49 with Ryan Woodzell taking third in 9:00.95.

In the 200 free, Erini Pappas represented the Stags with her third-place swim (2:13.36) before the men’s team swept the three spots by Joseph Stewart (1:53.55), Tim Regan (1:53.70), and Ed Hunt (1:57.81). The 100 back also saw a sweep by the men, namely Oliver McLaughlin (57.56), Aidan Schnapf (1:00.78), and Jay Parente (1:02.08). Newcomer Nora Segurola Larrinaga garnered the top time in the event with  1:05.40 in addition to Serafina Viola securing third in 1:07.78.

The women’s 100 breaststroke saw Tone Sandsjoe (1:14.61) and Caroline Krawiec (1:18.10) come in first and third respectively with the men taking first and second based on the performances from Hans Lim (1:05.70) and Jeffrey Vlass (1:07.69). The 100 fly was won by Olivia Glaser (2:26.13) and Ryan Woodzell (2:13.61) with Joey Nizzardo touching the wall third (2:16.07).

Two first-place swims were registered by Oliva Thompson (27.39) and Alex Belfer (23.84) in the 50 free followed by Lily Barker’s third-place finish (27.85) and Patrick Gill’s second-place finish (24.13). Barker was the lone representative in the 100 free, a third-place run in 1:01.49, while the men 52swept the event behind the efforts of Tim Regan (52.62), Alex Belfer (53.20) and Patrick Gill (54.48).

The 200 back resulted in another sweep by the men, represented by Ed Hunt (3:09.76), Aidan Schnapf (2:10.08), and Oliver McLaughlin (2:11.98). Nora Segurola Larrinaga was first in the event on the women’s side (2:20.28) followed by Erini Pappas (2:21.65). In the 400 breaststroke, Tone Sandsjoe was second in 2:45.48 and Cailey Stockwell took third in 2:47.30. The men took all three slots once again with Hans Lim (2:27.25), Jeffrey Vlass (2:27.42), and Alex Sirkowski (2:45.16).

Erin Hoyland secured second in the 400 free with a time of 4:41.55 while Joseph Stewart (4:16.51), Joey Nizzardo (4:20.25), and Ryan Woodzell (4:23.78) rounded out the top three for the Stags. In the 100 fly, Maggie O’Donnell (1:06.86) and Tim Regan (59.20) won the event  with Jay Parente taking third (59.67) for the men.

The 200 IM completed the individual events with Fairfield taking five of the six top three-spots in the results. Cally Gray (2:29.90) and Cailey Stockwell (2:31.32) held second and third place for the women. The men’s team took all three spots with Ed Hunt winning the event (2:09.17) followed by Hans Lim (2:11.05) and Jeffrey Vlass (2:16.85).

The Stags will take their first road trip of the season next weekend when they travel to Monmouth University on Friday before finishing the weekend at Rider University on Saturday.
