Cougars Race Hard at Red & White Meet

Red Team edges White Team, 87.5-86.5

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving Team competed at home for the first time this season Friday as they hosted the annual Red & White Meet at the CRWC Natatorium. The Red Team narrowly defeated the White Team, 87.5-86.5, in the unofficial intra-squad scrimmage.

Leading the way on the swimming side was freshman Eleanna Koutsouveli, who won two events for the Red Team and earned 19 total points. Taylor Olanski (White) won a pair of diving events and earned 18 points, while Micaela Bouter (Red) grabbed 14 points. Sharo Rodriguez (White) tallied 13.5 points, and rounding out the top five was Emma Moore (Red) with 12 points.

The Cougars opened the day by holding three diving events. Olanski (White) won both the Platform and 3-Meter Dives, while Bouter (Red) won the 1-Meter and finished second in the 3-Meter. Danielle Shedd (White) placed third in the 3-Meter and second in the 1-Meter.

The first swimming event was the 100-Yard Butterfly, with White Team members Rodriguez and Taylor Derevyanik taking the top two spots. Moore (Red) rounded out the podium, with Maya Owens (Red) and Koutsouveli (Red) finishing out the top-five and earning points.

Next on the schedule was the 100-Yard Backstroke. Koutsouveli (Red) won the event, with Doroteja Bednjanec (White) and Jasmine Williams (White) finishing right on her heels. Rodriguez (White) and Jenny Penneck (Red) tied for the fourth spot and split the points.

In the 100-Yard Breaststroke, sophomore Ashley Grijalva took the top spot for the Red Team. Cameron Balkom placed second and Derevyanik came in third, with both earning points for White. Hannah Herbst and Rachel Hobbins, both from the Red Team, rounded out the top five.

The Red Team won another event with the 100-Yard Freestyle. Moore took top honors, but three White Team members, Caitlin Horner, Bednjanec and Julie Gibson, earned the next three positions. Owens (Red) placed fifth to earn the final point.

Koutsouveli scored another victory for the Red Team by taking the top spot in the 100-Yard IM. White Team members Derevyanik and Rodriguez rounded out the podium, while Grijalva finished fourth for Red and Gibson placed fifth for White.

The Red Team finished in three of the four scoring positions in the 200-Yard Freestyle. Delia Weber and Herbst finished first and second, while Conor Glenn took third for the White Team. Hobbins (Red) placed fourth, capping the points for the event.

Going into the final event, the 600-Yard Freestyle Relay, the Red Team held a narrow lead, 83.5-75.5. White won the relay and was awarded 11 points, but Red finished second and earned four points to secure an 87.5-86.5 victory.

UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS

Houston returns to official competition at the Rice Invitational, to be held Oct. 23-24 in Houston. The Cougars will battle against the host Owls along with Arkansas and Incarnate Word.

COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the first time as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC Natatorium from Feb. 17-20, 2016. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19, 2016 in Atlanta.
