ABOUT THE PHILL HANSEL INVITATIONAL

From 1975-1996, Hansel was the most influential man for the University of Houston swimming and diving team. He guided the Cougars to more than 70 dual meet victories and ten Top-20 finishes at the AIAW and NCAA Championships. All of that hard work paid off, as Phill Hansel was inducted into the Hall of Honor on Nov. 14, 2008. In 1996, Hansel finished out the season with over 39 years of coaching experience and was recognized as one of the most successful collegiate swim coaches in the nation.

In his honor, the University of Houston will host the Phill Hansel every fall.

This year’s Phiill Hansel Invitational will include Nevada, UC Davis, Rice, Air Force, Tulane, Colorado State, Florida Gulf Coast, Northern Colorado, Washington State, North Texas, Nebraska Omaha and New Mexico.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Cougars enter the meet ranked 21st in the most recent Collegiate Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of American Coaches’ (CSCAA) Poll. The ranking is the highest in program history for the squad. Houston currently holds conference-leading times in 12 events and is undefeated in dual meets this season.

The Cougars have won three consecutive Phill Hansel Invitationals under Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka. Winning the meet last season with a staggering 1,727 points.

SCOUTING THE FIELD

The 13-team championship-style team will welcome teams from the Mountain West, Southland, MPSF, CCSA, Pac-12, Summit and American Athletic Conference.

Houston faced CCSA defending champion FGCU earlier this month, defeating the Eagles in dual-meet action.

UC Davis turned in a runner-up finish at the conference championships last season, along with Nevada who finished second in the Mountain West.

Tulane will visit Houston for the second time this season, after falling to the Cougars earlier in the year in dual-meet action.
