Houston, Texas IMer Hannah Sumbera Commits to Nearby Rice

Hannah Sumbera of Houston, Texas has made a verbal commitment to the Rice Owls for 2017-18.

“I chose Rice University because of the outstanding academics and swim program. The people at Rice are phenomenal and the bond between the students at the university is unbelievable. I love the fact that I am close to home and can see my family frequently. And lastly, I love all the girls on the team and the wonderful coaching staff! Go Owls!”

Sumbera is a national-level IMer, 200 breaststroker, and 200 butterflier out of Houston Swim Club. All but one of the top times in her best four events came from either the NCSA Spring Championships or the NCSA Summer Championships this past season. In the spring meet she finaled in both the 200 fly and 200 IM. In August, she finished 8th in the 200 fly, 9th in the 200 breast, 12th in the 200 IM, and 14th in the 400 IM.

Her best events are:

  SCY LCM
200 breast 2:19.97 2:37.65
200 fly 2:01.81 2:18.91
200 IM 2:03.90 2:20.00
400 IM 4:23.17 5:02.04

Sumbera could add big points to the Owls’ score at conference; her 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM would have scored in their respective A finals at 2016 Conference-USA Championships, while her breast would have made the B final. Rice ended up second at the conference meet, 17.5 points ahead of Marshall and 318 behind Florida International.
