WASHINGTON (January 25, 2020) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving team went crosstown and defeated rival Catholic, 162-134. With the victory, HU improved to 6-2 on the season.
Freshmen trio of Miles Simon (Atlanta), Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.) and Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) led the way, each recording a pair of individual victories.
Simon won the men’s 200 Free (1:44.95) and 200 Back (1:57.14) with noteworthy performances. The Atlanta native’s times in the 200 Free and 200 Back rank 10th and fourth all-time in program history, respectively.
Thompson also etched himself into the school’s record book by winning the 1000 Free (9:57.63), which is the third-fastest mark in school history. Additionally, the Bahamas product took gold in the men’s 200 IM, clocking in at 1:59.23.
Solomon earned victories in the 50 Free (21.86) and 100 Butterfly (52.94).
Other notable individual wins include sophomore Miguel Davis, Jr. (Washington/200 Breast/2:17.06) and freshmen Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago/100 Free/47.08) and T’lez Foulkes (Durham, N.C./100 Breast/1:00.42).
HU also claimed wins in a pair of relay events: 200 medley relay (1:37.47) and 200 free relay (1:27.08).
Newcomer Reese Samuel (Pittsburgh) finished runner-up in the men’s 200 Butterfly (1:58.99), which was the sixth-best time in program history.
Third-year Bison Jalen Watson (Miami) continues to improve on the board, registering a new personal best (177.05) in the men’s 1-meter dive, which ranks fourth all-time in school history.
On Feb. 2, Howard closes out the regular season at NJIT. Meet time is set for 1 p.m.
WASHINGTON (January 25, 2020) – Howard University women’s swimming & diving team went on the road to knock off crosstown rival Catholic, 159-137. With the win, HU moved back to .500 (4-4) on the year.
Junior Christian Nickolas (Brentwood, Calif.), sophomore Madison Freeland (Glenside, Pa.) and freshman Courtney Connolly (White Lake, Mich.) led the way, each earning a pair of individual victories on the day.
Nickolas continues her dominance on the board with wins in the women’s 1-meter (260.90) and 3-meter (207.05) dives. In the 1-meter dive, she produced the fifth-highest score in program history.
Freeland also etched herself in the school’s record books, winning the women’s 1000 Free (11:06.03) with the second-fastest time in program history. Additionally, the Pennsylvania native claimed gold in the 100 Free (54.51).
Connolly registered victories in the 200 Free (2:03.26) and 200 IM (2:19.54).
Third-year swimmer DeAngela Fobbs (Upper Marlboro, Md.) won the women’s 200 Butterfly, clocking in at 2:19.78, which ranks ninth all-time in school history.
Other noteworthy individual wins include senior Leanne McMaster (Kingston, Jamaica/200 Breast/2:34.22), sophomores Asha Evans (Atlanta/50 Free/25.11) and India Jackson (Philadelphia/100 Breast/1:10.68) and newcomer Genesis Lewis (Valencia, Calif./100 Butterfly/1:03.70).
Howard also claimed top spots in a pair of relay events: 200 medley relay (1:52.69) and 200 Free relay (1:40.93).

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic University men’s swimming & diving team was edged by Division I opponent Howard on Saturday afternoon in a 162-134 dual meet loss at the DuFour Center Pool.
The Cardinals opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-medley relay as Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores, Chris Grunbok, Kevin Jay, and George Isaacs teamed up for a time of 1:40.39.
Ellis Prescott and Lenny Brown made their contributions in the distance events once again, starting with second and third in the 1000-freestyle. Prescott got second at 10:14.25, followed by Brown at 10:24.16 for a total of seven points. Luke Nicholson (1:51.11) and Matthew Mahon (1:51.46) then took second and third in the 200-freestyle to tack on additional points.
Schriefer-Flores earned the team’s first event win of the afternoon with a winning time of 54.34 in the 100-backstroke.
Gregory McCarthy touched first for a victory in the 200-butterfly with his a 1:58.04 time.
Isaacs took second in the 50-freestyle sprint with a time of 22.34, followed by teammate Brian Aberle just behind at 22.40.
Schriefer-Flores continued his strong meet with a second-place finish in the 200-backstroke at 2:04.07, and Dan Lawrey trailed for third at 2:04.60.
The Cardinals swept first, second, and third in the 500-freestyle as Prescott touched first with a sub-five minute win at 4:57.63. Brown took second at 5:03.05 and Nicholson touched third at 5:14.46. The trio earned 16 points in the event, collectively.
McCarthy picked up more points with his second-place finish in the 100-butterfly at 53.20.
Catholic closed the meet with a second-place spot in the 200-freestyle relay for four points. Isaacs, Schriefer-Flores, Mahon, and McCarthy combined for a 1:29.80 time.
On the boards, freshman Robert McHale broke out to earn points with first-place finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. McHale got first at 1-meter with his score of 232.95, and first in the 3-meter at 215.15.
Teammate Will Chester took second in both events, earning 203.05 in the 1-meter and 177.08 in the 3-meter. Seamus Koehr grabbed third at the 3-meter with his 122.30 score.
Up next for the Cardinals is the final meet of the year before Landmark Conference Championships, a dual meet against local foe Marymount (Va.). Catholic hosts the Saints on Saturday, February 1 at 2 p.m. at the DuFour Center.

The Cardinals opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay as Megan Leibfreid, Madeline Doucette, Angela Castano, and Emma Gould teamed up for a time of 1:53.83 to earn four points.
The Cards then took spots two through four in the 1000-freestyle distance event. Kelly Smith touched second at 11:26.05, followed by teammates Claire Laux (11:36.07) and Mary Pilkington (11:49.36). Kate Von Heeringen then took second in the 200-freestyle at 2:04.95.
Caroline Beal earned the team’s first event win in the 100-backstroke with her winning time of 1:00.89.
Doucette picked up four points in second place at 1:11.36 in the 100-breaststroke. Kayla Ruffo (2:26.33) and Emily Tighe (2:27.83) then took second and third in the 200-butterfly.
Alexa Hipp and Leibfreid followed suit with second and third place finishes in the 50-freestyle sprint at 25.72 and 25.82, respectively, for a total of seven points. Gould, Megan Lowell, and Castano then went second, third, and fourth in the 100-free.
The Cardinals swept the top three spots for a total of 16 points in the 200-backstroke as Beal continued her strong afternoon with a victory at 2:13.16. Teammates Hipp and Bridget Roach trailed at 2:15.74 and 2:24.96.
Soon after, the Cards continued applying pressure with another one-two-three sweep in the 500-freestyle. Von Heeringen touched first at 5:31.79, followed by Smith (5:40.14) and Colleen McDonald (5:41.70).
Tighe took second in the 100-butterfly with her time of 1:04.64 for four points.
Catholic closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay as Castano, Leibfreid, Hipp, and Gould combined for a time of 1:44.37.
On the boards, senior Mackenzie Earley led the way with a second-place finish in the 3-meter event and third in the 1-meter. Earley earned 151.10 on 1-meter and 153.00 on 3-meter. Teammate Colleen O’Callaghan took third in the 3-meter with a score of 138.50.
Up next for the Cardinals is the final meet of the year before Landmark Conference Championships, a dual meet against local foe Marymount (Va.). Catholic hosts the Saints on Saturday, February 1 at 2 p.m. at the DuFour Center.
