Speakman Smith, from the Episcopal School of Jacksonville, will be swimming at Howard University next year. Smith signed a National Letter of Intent with the Bison, stating: “I chose Howard University for the opportunity to grow not only athletically but also academically. Howard University has a rich history with a great biology and research program which gives me the best opportunity to pursue my career dream while swimming in college. Coach Askew is a student first coach and I trust in his philosophy to help me improve the next 4 years. I love the team and can’t wait to be in DC next year! Go Bison!”
Speakman placed seventh in the 100 breast (58.06) at the FHSAA 1A State Championship in Stuart, Florida earlier this month. He also finished 12th in the 50 free (21.74) and contributed to Episcopal’s 200 medley relay (26.49 breaststroke) and 200 free relay (21.42 split). Smith trains year-round for the Episcopal Amberjax under coaches Martin Zubero and Greg Burgess. He had a strong long course summer season, earning PBs in the 50/200/400m freestyles and the 50/100/200m breaststrokes.
His top SCY times are:
- 50 breast – 27.02
- 100 breast – 57.32
- 200 breast – 2:08.53
- 50 free – 21.74
- 100 free – 49.74
In Howard’s press release, head coach Nicholas Askew said, “Smith is an outstanding young man and comes from a great family. We are thrilled to welcome him into the legacy of Bison swimming. I am confident that his accomplishments in the pool and in the classroom will translate to immediate success at HU.”
