Texas A&M sophomore Shaine Casas is now the 7th-fastest 100 yard backstroker in history, jumping one spot ahead of 4-time Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers in the all-time rankings.
Swimming on Friday evening at the 2019 Art Adamson Invitational in his home pool, Casas swam a 44.48 in the 100 yard back final.
Casas’ previous best time was a 45.94 at last year’s SEC Championship meet. He wound up not swimming that race at NCAAs individually, instead switching to the 100 fly as his day 3 event.
This summer, at the US National Championships, Casas won the national title in long course with a 52.72. That also ranks him as the 7th-fastest American in the history of the event.
The only swimmer who has ever been faster in the 100 yard backstroke as a teenager is Ryan Murphy, who swam 44.17 at the 2015 NCAA National Championships. Murphy is also the current World Record holder in the 100 long course meter backstroke.

Isn’t Nick Thoman’s time above 44.07 rather than 55.07?
Yes, and that was crazy fast. Head to head with prime Grevers. Great race.
Throwback to what feels not so long ago, when lochtes 44.6 wasn’t really being touched
Think we want to double check that 55.04 by Nick Thoman.
It appears that he has successfully vibed tonight.
This guy’s on my watchlist for Tokyo!
Agree. He’s going to be one of those breakout OT guys. Love Murph and Grevers, but this guy has got some skeelz.
He is a danger to those 2 for sure …..
Connor Oslin is a mouthwatering man
Dude is peaking (or beginning to peak) at the right time
This guy’s great
